What are my Options? Adding Auxiliary to OEM Nav Unit

Hi All,

I've been searching the forums and couldn't really find a most updated answer and was curious if anyone could point me in the right direction.

I recently picked up an 05 Limited v8 4wd, it has stock OEM Navigation, 1 dis cd player. No tape deck or auxiliary input (bummer).

What seems to be the standard for adding this feature to the dash/vehicle? Is it better to find a bluetooth system as well?

I appreciate all the help!

I installed and have been using the iSimple ISTY651 on mine. It has both Bluetooth as well as auxiliary input of your choice (either USB or Ipod/Iphone)

I put a USA Spec Bluetooth in my 2004 non-JBL. Look at or call Crutchfield to see if it fits yours, works great on mine.

My 06 Sport 4x4 V6 has the factory nav, but with a 4 CD player behind the tilt-screen, and an input jack at the right lower corner of the front wall inside the console box under the armrest. It has an attached rubber cover you have to pull away to insert the standard (3.5mm?) male connector. My son plugs his iPhone in there often and plays his music through the system in the AUX mode.

That sounds cool and I wish I had that. Unfortunately I have a standard single disc player and the only input in the arm rest is the 115v switch.

I looked all over and couldn't find an aux. I don't have an AUX button either.

We all seem to have a mix of features that would be nice to have in one vehicle. While I have the 4 CD player, the Aux button and plug that you lack, you have the 115V which I don't and wish I had. :drum:

Truth. I wonder what the dealer would do if I was to bring my car in and ask for an AUX installed. That is basically what I want to do.

Your head unit probably has CD changer capability that isn't being utilized. In other words there's probably a plug connection on the back of the head unit with nothing plugged into it. That's where the USA Spec Bluetooth unit plugs into the head unit on my 2004 (without Nav). Check with Crutchfield.

Thanks for advice 4by4th. I did check with them and found they have an adapter upwards of $120. I was hoping it would be a cheaper plug and play option, and I'm still hesitant because Amazon reviews are mixed. Do you have any experience with this brand?

Thanks!

Yes, like I said earlier, I have this in my 4Runner. No idea why Amazon reviews are mixed, it works perfectly for me. I previously had a USA Spec iPod adapter that had a cord that plugged into the iPod and later into my iPhone 4s. I replaced it with the Bluetooth USA Spec to stream music from my iPhone 5s. Both work flawlessly and sound great. I honestly can't tell any difference in sound quality from CD's to the bluetooth streaming wirelessly.

The steering wheel controls work for volume (obviously) and to skip or repeat songs. When I get in to the 4Runner, it automatically connects and if I turn the radio off and on quickly, music resumes where it left off from my iPhone. My wife and son both use it with their iPhones too. Sometimes if more than one of us are in range, you might have to go into settings on your phone and select it since it can only connnect to one phone at a time. It's kind of cool though to turn the radio off and back on when we all get in the 4Runner and it starts resumes playing music from whoever's iPhone is connected.

Something else it does very well is hands free calling. Music turns off when a call comes in and the radio tells the phone number calling and you connect to the call with the steering wheel controls. Calls sound loud and clear from both ends. When you hang up, music resumes where it left off.

Well worth the $120, it does so much more than any Aux plug ever could. I know that from experience because my 2008 Honda Accord came with an Aux plug.

I recommend getting it from Crutchfield if you have any hesitation with installation since their technical support may be helpful to you. Ask them to be sure the wire harness will plug directly into your stock radio.

Here's a link to a webpage that shows how to get to the back of the radio:
