what are my options for a gps unit thst can do roads but also forest rds?

Looking for a gps unit that can do...
- normal rds with traffic
-forest rds for off road or expo travel
-international incase I do an overland trip.

What are my options? BTW I have a Samsung S5 which I guess I can also load a gps app on. Willing to do either a separate unit or one on my phone

The Garmin Montana fulfills all your requirements except traffic.
It's a real mapping GPS that you can use handheld, and then snap into a vehicle mount.
Unfortunately, it has drawbacks for multi-use:
1. You have to load different map sets for street nav versus topo/backcountry.
The built-in memory may hold both(I haven't tried), but I just swap the micro-SD card. I don't use street nav much.
2. It's a really expensive unit to leave in the car.
3. Currently there is no way, and no future way anticipated, to get traffic supered over your street nav.

I plan to acquire an inexpensive($130?) street nav unit for that purpose.

Some claim success using tablets like iPad and Samsung and the various apps for street and backcountry nav. It'd be nice to have that big screen, for sure.

It will do turn by turn if you have WiFi but even better is its functionality for back country roads and topology maps.

You can try out the app for free on your S5.

What I do is DL the maps before my trip and go in and manually leave markers for the trail heads I want to use.

With 10+ different free US govt maps it works great for less than $200.
