What are the Best Tires for 5th Generation?

I am looking for a good looking tire that will work on paved roads with the occasional off-road capabilities. I mostly drive highway but want something that looks better than the typical stock-tire. Something more aggressive looking.

Willing to give up some on-road comfort for off-road capabilities and better looks but don't want to give up too much. Looking for the right balance.

I drive a 2011 4x4 SR5. Everything is stock right now.

Thinking about BFG T/A KOs, Duratracs, and BFG All Terrains.

Any thoughts on these three now that Duratracs and Rugged Terrains have been out a while.

Use the search sticky with 5th gen. There is a ton on it. Most people will agree that the Duratracs are about one of the more aggressive A/t tires for looks and pretty good on road to. I got a set of the BFG mud terrains for a song and will soon install. They are more aggressive than I really need but for half the price of duratracs I couldn't pass them up.

I really like BFG All Terrains. They are quiet on the road, not extremely heavy but have a strong carcass and resist punctures and damage very well. They also last a long time if you rotate them. They are great off road (not mud though) and not so aggressive that they are overkill for mostly on road driving.

I agree with this. I have Duratracs on my FJ and they are loud and mushy relative the the BFG TAKOs I have owned in the past. I like Duratracs a lot, but not for a highway rig. I had BFG TAKOs on a 2010 SR5 and they really improved cornering and even nose dive to some extent and they look great.

It was a tough decision between the claws and Interco TSLs, but I think the claws are slightly better for noise, and more inline with the OP's requirements.

I can't speak to the BFGs but I'm glad someone else has finally said the Duratracs are loud. I too have them on my FJ and they were fantastic for the first 15k but then became unbearably loud so I took them off at 30k. Fantastic tire in the wet, snow and dirt plus they still have a ton of life left at 30k but they just got too loud as they aged.

I have a set of Cooper ATP's and am really pleased with them and they have a great price point at discount tire. Just my .02!

If you haven't bumped into it yet, check out this thread that 1Engineer started regarding AT Tires. It's primarily focused on the Cooper AT3 tires, but discusses the ATP's and others. You didn't specify if what part of NC you are in to know how much snow you may be subject to, or what type (how extreme) your occasional off-roading may be. I would think these should have a significant impact on your tire choice. Any AT tire will look better on your SR5 than the OEM tires. I ended up going with the AT3s a couple of months ago.

I went to a few shops and put eyes on the tires. Not useful for performance but useful for looks.

I really didn't care for the Rugged Terrains so ruled them out.

Loved the look of the BFG's TA KO. Guy at Firestone (don't carry but can order) even suggested them before the words came out of my mouth.

Discount has a set of Duratrac's coming in Monday so waiting to see those before deciding. Guy there suggested those over the KOs as well as the Nitto Terra Grapplers. But at only $100 cheaper for the Nitto set, I am leaning Duratrac or KOs.

Those Cooper's don't look bad online. I check those out when I go back as well and read up on them.

I am in the Raleigh area, so limited snow. Nothing hard core off road wise. If anyone has suggestion of place to go in the NC area, let me know.

yeah, that thread on tires that 1engineer made is a pretty solid guide. Not knowing much about tires, it was a big help for me. I just recently bought a set of Nitto Crosstek at NTB where they have buy 3 get 1 free. $660 for everything. My 4R is not modified in any way, so these are original size. I am very happy with them, as I do very light off-roading. Most of my driving is on pavement, but these have a little more aggressive look. I have had the opportunity to test them out in pretty heavy snow since I got them on, and I am pretty impressed with them. I have had Firestone Destination AT and General Grabbers, both of which were very good. The Nitto's got good reviews and came with a 60k mile tread warranty and are made in the USA. So far, I am very happy and cannot believe the huge difference in the original Dunlops that I replaced.

interesting you should say that [MENTION=96409]Canazes9[/MENTION]. i was parked next to/talking to an FJ owner during a snowstorm recently and she was singing praise for the MTZs. "best tire i've ever had in the snow." i was surprised to hear it due to minimal siping and relatively big lugs. she and her husband were moving to Alaska next month also!

my Duratracs have gotten super, super loud and their winter traction is but a faint memory of what it was. i'm considering other options for my next set. if i could find a tire shop that didn't give me that dead-eyed, cow-on-the-side-of-the-road look when i ask about having tires siped, i'd be open to a lot more options.
