What are the Best Tires for 5th Generation?

interesting you should say that [MENTION=96409]Canazes9[/MENTION]. i was parked next to/talking to an FJ owner during a snowstorm recently and she was singing praise for the MTZs. "best tire i've ever had in the snow." i was surprised to hear it due to minimal siping and relatively big lugs. she and her husband were moving to Alaska next month also!

my Duratracs have gotten super, super loud and their winter traction is but a faint memory of what it was. i'm considering other options for my next set. if i could find a tire shop that didn't give me that dead-eyed, cow-on-the-side-of-the-road look when i ask about having tires siped, i'd be open to a lot more options.

anybody else diggin' the MTZ?

My winter driving experience is very limited, but I did drive the 4Runner through the pass south of Alpine, Tx in a winter storm this Thanksgiving. My son was following me in my Tacoma also equipped with MTZ's and they both performed quite well - as far as I know, we were the last vehicles to make it through the pass:











With this years uncharacteristic colder winter, my wife and I have both had the opportunity to drive the MTZ's in icy road conditions several more times and they have been very reassuring to drive! I bought the first set because I wanted the Off-road performance. The off road performance was as expected but the on road performance has been a very pleasant surprise. They are getting noisier as they get older, but they still are quite tolerable.

thanks for that info, Canazes9! yeah, loudness is to be expected but something i can deal with. i'm actually a little surprised how loud my Duratracs have gotten—they sound just like MTs at this point.

the MTZs look great. am i right that the Cooper STT is kind of a clone tire? they're a good bit less expensive, but not quite as sharp looking.

I don't have any 1st hand experience w/ the STT's. They look similar and they are all part of the Cooper umbrella.....

Right now I'm debating between the new Goodyear Adventure AT and the General Grabber AT. Both look like great tires. Its going to boil down to price and availability combine with which tire shop can get the rims I want in.

Mileage? I replaced my last Duratracs at about 42K miles, still had tread, but were loud.

I went to a few shops and put eyes on the tires. Not useful for performance but useful for looks.

I really didn't care for the Rugged Terrains so ruled them out.

Loved the look of the BFG's TA KO. Guy at Firestone (don't carry but can order) even suggested them before the words came out of my mouth.

Discount has a set of Duratrac's coming in Monday so waiting to see those before deciding. Guy there suggested those over the KOs as well as the Nitto Terra Grapplers. But at only $100 cheaper for the Nitto set, I am leaning Duratrac or KOs.

Those Cooper's don't look bad online. I check those out when I go back as well and read up on them.

I am in the Raleigh area, so limited snow. Nothing hard core off road wise. If anyone has suggestion of place to go in the NC area, let me know.

x2 I love my Authorities, the only issue being they are undersized by 2" in diameter and I feel like the tread is going down really fast but both of those are kind of expected with it being a cheaper Walmart tire. Nonetheless, perform great onroad, good offroad, and are beastly in the snow so far. Also bulge out really nicely at 15psi.

I like my Duratracs, have them for 31K miles and don't find them too loud. Plan to get another set when they'll wear out.

No specific reason. They looked nice, I just hadn't read enough about them. Liked the BFG KOs better and heard great things about their performance ect.

First time I have had someone suggest Nittos. Only $100 cheaper so unless I hear great things about them, I am leaning BFG (or Duratrac depending on how I like their look). Heard great things on both those tires. It seems to be a flip of the coin which one is best, after reading some threads.

I've got 5k miles on my Bridgestone Revos and I'm liking them more and more. Great in the snow and rain. Quiet and the mileage hit isn't as bad as I feared.

Not an exact apples to apples comparison but I'm on my third set of the Terra's on my work truck. They do good in everything for me. My truck is the company you're truck for muddy jobs and snow. Get close to 50k on each set. And the availability in a 10 ply for what I need.

I'm planning on putting Coopers on the Black Rhino Zambia 20x9s and I saw this while browsing this morning:

275/55-20 Cooper Tires

I'm not sure if I am going with the Zeons or Discoverers but they do seem to have plenty of stock in that size.
