What are the threaded mounts on the roll bar for?

I'm planning the raised sleeping platform/storage box build for my son's '89 runner.

Getting ready for a week long Moab trip for Spring break 2016. I know I know- the dreaded EJS week. Unfortunately with my son being in school I have no other option but to deal with the crazyiness of the EJS. Would love to go some other time but can't get the time off work in the Summer.

I've seen some fantastic builds on here which have given me a great start for my build. Question- I know the upper threaded holes on the roll bar are for the shoulder belts mounts but what are the lower brackets with the captive nut for? Trying to decide if I want to keep that mount and utilize it for my platform mount or remove it and make another mount at a more ideal height for my platform. Thanks for any replies and any other pointers/build links for platform builds.

I think you may have answered your own question. The upper threaded holes are indeed for the shoulder belts, but the lower one is for the seat belt retractor mechanism. That is if I remember correctly, the U.S. versions didn't come with shoulder belts for the rear passengers (at least mine didn't). Only lap belts. The overseas Hilux Surf did though, I believe.

But, my memory doesn't serve me well sometimes :noidea:

Thanks Night Wolf. I was making roll bar related searches- should have searched rear seat belts. I'm liking the idea of adding rear shoulder belts. Sounds like the Subaru retro fit may be the way to go. I think I will design my sleeping platform so I can add the shoulder belts later. :cheers:

Night Wolf is correct, the upper bolt holes are for the shoulder belt guide brackets, and the lower brackets are for the retractors. I ordered belts from JC Whitney and they bolted right up.

Did they come with the retractors and the guide for the upper mounts? Do you have a pt#? I looked on their catalog but might have missed it.

It comes with hardware and bolts right up. My '85 didn't even have lap belts.

Looks like there are a few options-
front belts out of similar year Toyota p/u
front belts out of a first or second gen 4Runner
rear belts out of a '95 Subaru Legacy
or the aftermarket belt route.

Apparently the first 2 options will have slack in the belt when not in use but can be modified with some stitch work to shorten up the belts.

I will be looking into the #3 junk yard option as I am a lazy cheap mofo! Have to say that the JC Whitney belts look nice but I've got too many other things I could do with the $145.00

I got shoulder belts from a '92 Toyota pickup and they fit perfectly. They have the plastic housing cover. I got the female end of the belts too and they bolted right up. The tongue of the '92 didn't fit the female buckle of the '89 for some reason. The bolts fit fine.

90ish toyota pickups. There are different models that have more or less spacing between the mounting bolt and the retraction device.

Those seatbeltplanet.com kits look like nice seat belts @ $80.00 a set.
I picked up a some out of a '96 T100 yesterday at pap. Not fitting without some mods though. I'll post some pics if they work out.

That's a nice fit!
I used 86-69 pick-up belts but there's too much slack.
If ordering online, I would measure total distance from floor anchor, to seat anchor, to top mounting bolt on roll-bar, to bottom mounting hole on roll-bar.

I ended up cutting the webbing to fit and used my wife's sewing machine to secure to the ends.

glad they fit, even if you had to alter them.

i posted the subaru belt interchange info. they work well, and fit perfectly. no belt cutting/sewing. for a finished look, a cover for the retractor is needed going the subaru route. doesn't bother me, i'm interested in the functionality.

I used a donor set of rear belts from a '99 Isuzu Trooper for my '85 4Runner. Going to make a few adjustments, but they work & the kids can now ride safely in the back seat.

I ended up using the set out of a T100.



For some reason the retracter reel on the driver side is larger than the passenger side but other than that looks good. Also had to swap over the female end of the seat belt to match. Works out good because they are the newer style with the release button on the end of the latch assembly which makes it much easier to find the release button when trying to unlatch the belt when strapped in. I used the stock 4runner belt webbing for the female end because it was the correct length and then I swapped over the latch assembly from the new belt. Took it to a shoe repair place and had them stitch it back together for me.
