What are your thoughts on 4Runners competitors?

I just sold a 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee to get my 4runner and couldnt be happier!

My son in law has a 14 jgc diesel 55k he says he would trade me for my 4 runner limited every time he comes over here.

Not positive on this but my golf buddy has the 2014 durango & it's got all the bells & whistles but then again it's a Dodge ? Been on 2 road trips & it was pretty smooth & I sat in the back 6'2" (skinny 6'2") . Still rather have my 4r ! Nice having that 5.7 hemi though.

That isn't really a competitor anymore either. It is a more a V8 AWD station wagon. The Durango hasn't been much of a competitor to much since 2003. The second gen was a total mess.

Eh, the first gen I can tolerate. I know someone who had one for a few years. It ate through transmissions and had awful materials inside and out. It was awesome to tow his boats and drive like it was stolen. That 5.9 was a real monster. Too bad hurricane Sandy drowned it.

It's not clear whether he wants an off-road SUV or a CUV urban cruiser. It'd be nice if he replied to a couple of the questions he got about what he wants. Go to a different dealership...if they didn't let you drive the vehicle you wanted then they do not respect you as a customer. If the Limited was out of stock that is understandable but if the outright did not let you drive it for some random reason I would go elsewhere...they are already playing games with you...

Second...I just bought my T4R Trail less than a month ago and have zero regrets.

Prior to that I test drove the Grand Cherokee, Limited Wrangler, Dodge Durango, Nissan Xterra...out of this list the Grand Cherokee surprised me the most. It had very cool toys/features, ride was smooth, interior spacious enough.

I thought to myself...what did I want out of an SUV...well being able to Overland/off road was high on my list...I am very much a rookie but it has always been interesting to me.

This swayed me to go with the T4R Trail Ed w/KDSS. Along with the reliability & after market value.

**in short** think to yourself what you really want...the right vehicle will come to mind.

So I went to the Toyota dealership today to test out a 5th gen limited and they only let me test drive the sr5 model which struck me as odd and made me not want to do business with them.. But anyways, I feel like there's has to be something better out there for 40+ grand.. I'm a huge 4Runner fan but can't shake the feeling of Toyota ripping me off for what you get. I loved the cooled seats in the limited, awesome feature. Also noticed that cheap ass hyundais offer that option in some of their extremely cheap vehicles.. So givin your unbiased opinion do you believe there to be a better suv for the money? And if so why?

That's a good one. What keeps Jeeps on the road is their simplicity. Anything "fancy" on a Jeep or any other Chysler product is bound to break at around 80,000 miles. They cut corners whenever possible.

Yeah I'm guessing that's sarcasm and if it's not it needs to be. We are still receiving updated recall notices for the 13' Wrangler we traded in 8 months ago. Fun but junk.

My recommendation would be to buy an SR5 and drop the "extra" $$$ into the market. If the SR5 isn't quite "fancy" enough, have the interior converted to leather. I think that runs ~$1500. Not sure what "goodies" I would ever want that a base SR5 lacks. Then again, I'm a tightwad who hates to spend money.

I'm still here and have been reading your replies. But yes I am a fan of the 4Runner for its ruggedness and reliability, which is why I'm most likely going to go with it. As of right now I'm debating on getting the 2015 limited 4wd or getting a later model (2010-12ish 4wd) and putting a bunch of upgrades into it such as a lift, tires, bumper replacements etc.. I just really wish Toyota would say something about the 6th gen! Either option I go with I have to part ways with my camaro which is super fun to drive even tho it's a trouble maker and I can't do the things I want in it, so I want to make sure to get the perfect 4runner. I'll be mainly using it for long trips, off roading here and there, camping, towing a boat, driving on the beach, and as my DD. I really love all the features the 2014 and 2015 limited have.. So what do you think would be a good idea? Buy a 2010-12 and put a bunch of upgrades into it or buy a brand new limited, keep it stock for a while and possibly risk a new generation coming out in a year?

A 6th gen would be 2017 at the earliest, so are you willing to wait that long? If not then don't even consider it.

Ya I'm not really trying to wait that long, got the camaro at 42k miles so trying to get what I can out if it in trade value while I can. Just wish they'd show us some sort of idea of what the new gen will look like. If it's butt ugly I won't mind getting a 2015 but if it's awesome and especially if they offer a v8 again I would definitely wait, or maybe just get something cheaper till then. But as of right now I'm leaning towards the 2015 limited in 4wd.

Before answering your question, would you post up answers to the following:

• How will your SUV be used (be honest with yourself on use-cases)
• What are the main things you are looking for in the new vehicle?
• If you plan to do any off-roading, do you plan to modify the 4Runner (immediately or down the road a bit).
• Are you concerned with fuel economy?

The answers to these questions will allow others to give their opinion with a little more detail.

My guess is that the 6th gen will be based off of the 2016 Tacoma. It will be coming out soon and pictures are on the internet. It has a 3.5L engine and 6 speed auto trans. Look at the pictures and imagine the bed being replaced with a roof and rear windows.

One of the great parts of a 4runner is the resale.
If you want a 6th gen when it comes out, your 2015 4r will be worth more at trade than most of the similarly priced competitors.

I wouldn't hold your breath for a redesigned 4r to come out any day now. If a salesman has told you they're coming soon, he might be clueless or full of it.
