What Breaks Offroad on 4th Gens?

Necessitating that off roading involves breaking something is akin to suggesting that you're only swimming if you're choking on water. There's more than one way to skin a cat, and there's plenty of driving out there which doesn't necessitate having a 100k rock crawling rig to classify as being "off road".

You and I both know that you would never actually take your stock-ish 4runner on the Rubicon and expect nothing to break. The reason that people even think about doing an SAS is because they have already broken axles, been stranded, lost their girlfriend to someone like me driving an SAS 4x4, walked home and then had their truck towed. Its not "just cuz I needz me some dang' ol big axlez bruh", its much more serious than that and breaking things sucks.

I can't comment on how much fun you are at parties, but your Rubicon example just makes my point. That trail is an amusement park ride, not a trip into the backcountry per se. It's primarily there for people to test their vehicles and driving skills. When they're done they load up what's left on their trailer and pull it home. If that's what you like, more power to you.

But the OP wanted to know what might break if he's going to the Dollhouse in Canyonlands. The answer is, very likely nothing, assuming he's reasonably careful. But don't tell me the Doll House trip is not offroading. You can't get there in a Suburu or a Pathfinder, and it's one of the most remote places in the lower 48.

Actually, the post was about what breaks when off road. My response perfectly illustrates what breaks, since I seem to be the only person in this thread who can actually go OFF-ROAD, unlike people who simply drive on a bit of dust for a moment and think they can tackle King of the Hammers. So yeah, I am the drunk uncle with a 4x4 who noticed a bunch of prius owners talking about going off road and feel it is my duty to educate them before they injure themselves.

I'm surprised you don't own a 5th gen, you resemble most that do.

back to the topic of taking a 4Runner to the Dollhouse...

You will likely drag your rear bumper a few times. One of those receiver hitch shackle mounts will take most of the abuse and save your stock bumper.

Here are a few shots from our 2016 trip. The first one is hiking down into the Maze from the Maze Overlook. The second is at Standing Rock campground on the way to the Dollhouse. The rest of them are from the Dollhouse area itself.

Great place! Do it!

Btw, the "campgrounds" in the Maze district are just places where it is legal to park your vehicle and camp. No toilet facilities, picnic tables, drinking water, or any other amenities.
