I see the firearm threads...but I don't see what people are using and why. So interesting to see people spend insane amounts of money on awesome products from holsters to cans. BUUUUUT...how about we chat a little about the most important part. What and why do you use what you use to project all the money you just spent.

This came up today as I was out taking the dog for a walk. He has not been hunting for a while, left his collar at home, wind was blowing and the bastard took off a couple times. I ended up firing a couple rounds....to get his attention as I could not out whistle the wind. I was wanking to the wife that I just had to waste two very precious rounds for that GDF'n dog. Her reply was "WTF...you have more "bullets" than the army...shut the F up.

Well...1...not true I dont have more "bullets" than the army. 2...if I did have more "bullets' than the army...I would not be f'n still going to work. Those two rounds would have cost the average person easily $3-4...damn near a six pack for two rounds.

So what and why do you use what you use for plinking, range, hunting, self protection...not just handguns but all firearms? I'll wait to chime in on why and what I use if there is interest.

I am partial to my AK's.
But, .40 to get me to my 12 gauge for home defense.

I was shooting...(have some buddies in the LE crowd) the black talons...now they are called "Ranger SXT" in 9mm 127 +P+. They cost more than the premium 20rdn boxes costing 30 bucks or more per box.

Mostly Bulletman reloads for the .40 but I also have Winchester and Remington 165gr and 180gr. Hollow points for HD.
12ga birdshot for the range and 00buck for HD

.22lr for the 10/22 and 7.62x.39 for desert shooting along with anything else I decide to bring

Oh oh...thanks for clarifying. I am slow on the uptake at times. Have you done any accuracy/ballistic testing with your bullets?

Only the FMJ bullets out of the AK? Do you shoot any HP or SP out of it? Do you have any loads for HD for it? If not you should really look at the 123gr Hornady SST bullet...high expansion...low penetration. I think Hornady has some factory ammo loaded with it. Remember this bullet diameter really is not .308 it's .311.

I don't shoot 7.62x39 so I can't give any input.

The bulletmans.. I'm guessing are for your range and practice stuff are they jacketed, HC Lead, Lead, Coated Lead? Standard Rem/Win HP's or some of their specialty bullets standard velocity or +P? Why did you choose those for HD over what else is available. Have you tried any of the 135-155gr bullets at +P or +P+ for HD?

I love shooting "Badman Bullets" 180 HC for practice. (reloads) Super inexpensive, very accurate, no fouling. For HD I was shooting 135 Nosler HP's at +P+ velocity, but recently switched out to the 155 SXT at +P velocity. Only reason for switching was my Cor Bon ammo was really really old and I got the new stuff free.

Just the cheap Wal Mart loads for plinking. Pretty hard to beat them for value. Have you considered 4 Buck or #2 for HD...look into it. Cylinder bore or do you have some choke.

22LR. These you get pretty much what they load for a particular cartridge. I have tried them all and the Fed Gold Medal Match is the most accurate. It is just stupid expensive to shoot. For plinking I pretty much only shoot the cheapest bulk ammo I can find and what ever bullet they load into it. For hunting/killing things you cant beat the 32gr CCI Stinger bullet. Very effective on target performance for your 22LR.

3 words for self defense rounds: Federal Flight Control. There are several shot configurations and both standard recoil and low recoil loads. Patterns better than anything you'll ever find due to the wad design.

I shoot all sorts of target ammo, I prefer Winchester 9mm NATO but will shoot just about anything to kill paper and steel.

I Carry ra9ta in my 9's for SD and HD. Ra45ta for my .45's.

I like Speer GD .38 spc +p 135 gr gdhp short barrel for my wheel guns for SD and HD.

In my M4's for SD and HD I load Speer .223 rem GDSP 55 Grain bonded also load t556tnb1/MK318 mod 0 (for greater intermediate barrier penetration) MK262 Mod 1 (for longer range). I have a lot of others but those 3 get 99% of any job done. Also like match grade SMK's.

At the range I shoot prvi 5.56 69 grain match and m193.

For .308 it's typically t762tnb1/mk319 mod 0, federal fusion or federal match sMK's.

I shoot the same at the range, sometimes M80 ball.

12 gauge I shoot full magnum 2 oz 3" slugs at the range. Because it's fun to see everyone flinch!
HD is Winchester ranger 00 buck 8 pellet low recoil/ra12008 and ranger 2 3/4" 1 oz segmented slugs/ ra12rs15s slugs for SD purposes.

I also reload for all calibers and have probably hundreds of different loads that I carry with and shoot at the range with.

Preferred HD gun is a Daniel Defense MK18 with surefire 300 and aimpoint t2 micro. Loaded with speer GDSP bonded. 223 rem 55 gr.

Im sure this will open up a can of worms/opinions- but a good carbine with proper ammunition is the best overall choice for HD for TONS of reasons. Go read Dr. Roberts write up of why. Docgkr on light fighter.

I usually run a 12 with 00/slug combo or my Marlin Guides .45-70, but that's because the "home invaders" where I work are usually 4 legged and 400 lbs plus. At home (in the country but near the big city) I'm currently using my M1 carbine. It's not the biggest hitter on the block, but it's short, light and I love shooting it. If 15 rds of .30 don't cut it, I'm in deep doo doo no matter what I'm packing...

Well I found my self the victim of my own bad planning and when I went to qualify for my concealed carry they would not let me use the bag of reloads I brought. So I had to either reschedule my qualification day or burn throu gb a box of the rangers. Well I used the Rangers and I found out that my XD 45 did not lime that ammo. 3 stovepipes in 40 rounds fired.

Smh. Range officer agreed that "My pistol did not like my ammo cboice".

This is one of the many reasons you MUST train with what you intend to carry.

Different ammo has different POI versus POA, some guns don't like certain ammo or are just not quality firearms, the pressure differences cause different perceived recoil and follow up sighting changes.

Every range visit I end my day with a box of 50 of my preferred HD rounds in my current CCW. I practice drawing from the holster(s) I currently use and wear every day clothing.

Training is to mimick what may happen in real life. Train with what you wear, not range attire, train with what you carry both ammunition wise and gear wise, and artificially stress yourself out to induce the effects of what would happen in the real world- shooting at paper or steel in a static environment is not even really training- so I highly recommend getting out into a good weekend class with a quality instructor who will push you and your gear to the limit, making your ass move around and stressing the shit out of you.

Use malfunctions as practice. Malfunction drills are absolutely necessary once you have basic skills, function and safety down.

I've got an AK that I shoot mainly wolf and tul ammo from. I used to buy golden bear ammo but after coming to the conclusion that an AK will eat anything you shove down its throat I figured quantity over quality was fine. I haven't seen any difference in grouping out to 50 yards even with the cheaper stuff.

With my Glock 19, my 9mm target ammo is fiocchi, pmc, blazer brass, pretty much whatever's cheapest. If I'm carrying though I have either Hornady Critical Duty or Federal HST. Good point you made about shooting with what you carry. I haven't done that but I will now to make sure we are compatible!

Gunslinger 13 Not sure what all the numbers are, but I'm thinking it is a model/part number. My factory ammo is extremely limited. There is no way I can bring myself to spend hundreds of dollars on factory ammo to shoot it up on paper.I buy very few rounds of factory ammo....mainly because it is SOOOO EXPENSIVE! I have some that I carry in my pistols...mainly because of the bullet selection. I shoot 99.9% all reloads...again...cost savings and I reload during the slow months. I'm sitting around anyway...so I dont factor in the time element for my cost.

I prefer a high velocity, high expansion, well made bullet. Why I was asking what others use. I just think the faster/harder a bullet hits the odds of doing what is needed are increased.

Luckily the entire HD/PD issue I have no actual experience with. Hunting animals from Quail to Elk I have quite a bit, and I apply my experiences to my HD/PD ammo.

It seems like you like he Speed Gold Dot...yes/no...any specific reason?

For me:
I had the Cor Bon....but it is super old, and I have been trading it out for different ammo.

Pistol:
I like the Black/Talon in the semi autos and the +P and +P+. I have not had a pistol it did not function or shoot well in. I also like the Winchester Silver Tip bullets. There are years I do not even shoot a factory round out of my pistols.
Practice I just reload/shoot Badman Hard Cast....super inexpensive, shoot great, and don't foul the barrel at all.

Shotgun: I reload my own for upland birds. I shoot the cheapest steel I can buy for waterfowl. I have shot all the expensive stuff and compared it on the pattern board and chronograph. For me the cheep stuff works just as well for knocking down birds. I have not tried the Bismuth, et all....again just too expensive.
For my HD I like 4 Buck in 2 3/4 with a cylinder choke for 12ga, and #2 for the 20ga. I have done lots of patterning of loads. For my needed distances (inside the house) these give me the pattern I want. If I was outside at distances past 20-30 yards then I would want a closer pattern.

Practice: I can buy the Wal Mart box of 100 cheaper than I can reload it. It works just fine for breaking clay targets, cycles my autos....no not as good as the premium...but adequate.

I have done some patterning. Question....what distances are you considering for self defense? I did patterning with different chokes shooting lead #2 at different distances. Asking...Why would you want a super tight pattern....instead of a more open pattern for self defense.

My goal was a pattern of about 7-8" in diameter at 15'. I want to hit my target and I'm guessing my aim would not be so great while crapping my pants.
