What Bumpers/Tie Carrier do you run?

I just got my 4Runner about a week ago, and the whole truck is black/white but the bumpers are chrome. I do want a winch bumper and rear tire carrier and I am wondering what people run that they're happy with. I have seen ARB winch bumpers that look good and clean but they're super expensive. Just curious whats out there and Thanks in advance for input and suggestions

I got some bad news. There are a ton of great options out there, but if you think the ARB bumper is pricey, hold on to your socks.

Rear tire swing outs are even more expensive than the fronts.

You CAN a local shop fab something up for you to try to save some money.

I would say make sure you really want and or need something, and start saving. There are a few times a year that there a decent sales or group buys on armor, (black Friday), and so on. But none of this stuff is cheap. It's all custom. It's all heavy and not free to ship.

Most these rigs you see on here have taken a good chunk of time and money to come together. It a long process for most of us.

In the meantime, use the search function, Google images, and check out people's rigs for what you like and need. Sometimes, the items you want the most, are not the items you need the most.

Start looking at people's build threads. I've got CBI front and rear. I'm in Alaska and they were still cheaper then having a local (good) fab shop build a one off bumper for me. But twice the price of an ARB , so.......

A couple other things I forgot to mention.

Congratulations on your new 4runner purchase!

You have found an invaluable resource here on this forum. There is almost more information here than you can absorb. There are also a ton of very knowledgeable people here that are VERY helpful. It. Is fine to reach out for opinions and information, that's what this forum is for, but start by trying to research a few things to give you a good base of information so that you can ask the best, and most useful question you can.

For maintenance and troubleshooting, there is no better place to look. It has pretty much all been seen or done here. Do yourself a favor if you haven't already, research "pink milkshake" and "LBJ, (lower ball joint) failure". Ignore these two items and all other mods will just be wasted money until and IF they can get sorted.

I felt the same when I got here. I saw some of these bad ass rigs and got bit by the mod bug. I ended up doing things out of order as far as upgrade usefulness goes. I might approach things a bit differently today if I knew then, what I know now. For instance, a good tube bumper from AOR, Addicted Offroad is cheaper and would have suited me just fine, but a bumper might not have been one of my first few major upgrades either.

Oh, and anything cool, custom, and desirable generally has a lead time that ranges from a few weeks, to a few months, to, I never got it. It pays to do your research.

Congrats on the 4Runner! Sorry to say if you think the ARB is pricey? Bend over and grab your ankles cause this ish is expensive. Also AZ has a club that can be reached on FB called AZ4runners. Most active group.

First off everyone sorry for the delayed response. Long day at work. Secondly I suppose there was a lot of wishful thinking behind this thread. I worked at a shop that customized almost exclusively Jeeps. I did do some searching on Google and throughout the forum with the expectations to see the amount of products that Jeeps have. As far as the want vs need go, I totally agree there. There are a few items that I'd like to address before I do any bumpers. I took care of the lower ball joint problem by installing Moogs. I need to look more into the pink milkshake however so thank you for bringing that to my attention. In the desert heat down here in Yuma, I would like to flush the cooling system and add some BG supercool as well as install some flexalite fans. Otherwise my 4Runner is pretty much where I want it minus some Bilstien rear shocks. I am a super firm believer in preventative maintenance and improving the powertrain and associated systems with superior than OEM products so any input there would also be greatly appreciated.

I think you will find that oem parts for certain problems is the way to go, as in LBJs. Welcome to the jungle.

I'd rethink those Moog LBJs. They're known to fail with low miles.

I work in a chassis and suspension shop, in the time I have done this kind of work I've never seen Moog fail, unless they're in properly maintained. Some techs are lazy and won't grease the joints during services and some owners just don't know. I grease mine every oil change. I hope I a didn't just put my foot in my mouth, but we will see.

Totally overlooked this, I am going to change it as soon as I get home from vacation, my fuel economy is not great right now. I am turning 32" tires but it's still concerning how fast it burns premium fuel. What do you run for plugs? I like E3 plugs but I am kind of inclined to put NGKs in her because it's manufacturer recommended

Most guys will recommend either OEM or NGK dual electrode plugs, myself included.

Welcome to the 3rd Gen world. It's good to see more semi local people. If you've ever got a trail to run and want some company let me know. I don't know if Arizona has a good local group, but if you don't mind driving the Socal group has had some pretty good group runs the last year or so.

The weakest link on a 3rd gen 4Runner is the lower ball joint. It's the one area everyone on this forum will unanimously agree that Toyota OEM is the only choice. ITRE is the second.....
