what button is this?

sorry for the dumb question but i couldn't find nothing. i don't even have the owner's manual. but what is the green square button below the shifter(auto)? the letters on mine are faded. i press it once in a while but i don't feel a difference or change in the way the car goes. what is it used for?

I dont have an auto, but it is probably overdrive, can you feel a difference on hills?

I have two buttons on mine ( 1990 SR5 ), not sure which one is the green one tho.. One is for the Atomatic Transmission Mode, it toggles between normal and power. The other is called rear windows lock. Try pushing it and see if the rear window still operates. I'll check the labels on the buttons tonight.

thanks for the quick replys. yea when i do press the button i think it raises the shift points. i also noticed that it uses more gas in this mode right?

If the overdrive is OFF it should show on the dash .

The ECT button changes the shift points, not the overdrive button. ECT causes shifting at higher revs. Overdrive simply allows you to use top gear but does not change shift points.

the Overdrive button is on the side of your gear shifter.

When ethierone is pressed the dash will light up "ECT" or "OD off".

my uncle showed me all of that when I got my 4runner. its a really great feature for hills.. he taught me to turn the Over Drive off before turning the ECT on... it really helped me out today... going to Newport and back...

I believe that is the overdrive button, It has been a long time since I have owned an auto though.
