I wouldn't say auto mode = low end body. I have a 50D and it has an "auto" mode. It doesn't say auto, but it does have one. Don't all cameras have an auto mode?

Semantics... Lower would be more accurate, it was not meant to offend anyone. However, the answer is no, that not all bodies have an Auto mode. The higher end bodies drop the Auto mode, though they still have a "Program" mode. Auto mode has no use to more experienced shooters, and Program mode basically acts the same as Auto with more control. (i.e., when traveling, Program mode has it's benefits when you may not have time to alter the settings).
Keep in mind I am speaking for Nikon. I don't often bring Canon into the discussion for two reasons:
1. The arguments comparing the two are pointless
2. I do not shoot with a Canon

I have the Nikon D3100, for my experience level it is perfect and it cost half as much as the D90 with lenses.
I used to due Photography professional back in the mid 80's through mid 90s, back in the days of film. I shoot Nikon for 35mm, Hasselblad and Bronica for medium, and Sinar for larger format. And mostly Norman for lighting. I got burnt out and sold it all except for my 35mm stuff and a small set of portable strobes. I have a few older fixed lenses. I just bought a Nikon D3100 This is first SLR I have used since about 1998. Back then I did use a computer for my post production work but things are very different now.
I got the Nikon because my older lenses still works with the system. Much, if not all of the auto features won't work but I still have an old light meters (need a battery to see if it still works).
I will have to study up on all the extra features that you have with a DSLR. Back when I did this professionally about the only controls on a camera was your focus, aperture and shutter. The Sinar was a bellows style camera so it offered some unique controls.

Another D3100 here, took the plunge in December.
The camera is being used between my dad and I. He used to shoot professionally as well, so he picked ut the D3100 for the same reasons as Ross is saying. He's been out of the SLR loops for a while, and this is my first. So far the camera seems like a good match; it's working out well.

I have a Canon S3 (yeah I know, its a older model now, and not half as fancy as some of you other guys) but it suits me just fine
I've had great experiences with Canon's I've owned in the past, and when this one craps out, I'll more than likely buy another Canon

I've always enjoyed people getting their panties in a bunch over one or the other. Both are great companies when it comes to SLR's and both have their points where they excel. 6 to one in my opinion. My brother shoots on a 5d Mark II and that thing is killer. The D700 body just suited what I shoot way more and once you pick a body, you're pretty much locked down with the glass that follows (unless you have the loot to have both).

As long as it's User Friendly for you, then that's your camera.
Bottom line...it's about the final result.
