What can I change to put 285/75R16 on my 4Runner?!

I recently put a 2 1/2" Daystar lift (spacers) on my vehicle hoping to go with a much bulkier tire. So I took the original Goodyears 265/70R16 off and tried for a 285/75R16 but it didn't work. It was too wide of a tire. The guys at Sears told me that I would need even a higher lift or I could cut out my wheel wells. I said the hell with that and went with BFG Muds 265/75R16. It looks good but I know that 1 extra inch would look even better! I'm just getting into modifying my 4Runner so please bear with me if I sound like an idiot. I suppose the spacer lift was not what I needed? Should I do a suspension lift now? I am seeing plenty of pics from this forum of 4Runners with 285/75R16's. What am I missing?!!

I have a 2" Roger Brown body lift and I run 285s no problem, only a slight rub at full turning, but I took off my fender flares, so I have some extra clearance there. I am planning getting some SAWs up front and OMEs in the rear for another 2-3" of suspension lift and then I will have no problems. I know lots of folks who have the SAWs and OMEs setup and run 285s easy, but with some fender trimming for no rubbing. You might check out www.yotatech.com and do a search there to find some more answers.

Hope this helps!

I installed perf. prod. prog. springs and bilstein shocks ... kept the stock toyota 16" wheels on my 2002 sport edition 4runner... then got me 285/75 r16 BFG ... went in ok ... except for a little rubbing when I'm turning a little too fast. I took care of that by cutting about 1/2 inch of that plastic fender pointing inwards into the wheelwell, doesn't rub anymore.. even when I'm off-roading.
