Since there is no fluid connection (that I am aware of) between the power steering system and the engine, one would have to ask the question; Are you sure the power steering fluid was added to the power steering system, and not to the engine oil system?

unless a power steering line is hooked to a vacuum source instead of the power steering system?? I really don't see how it could be possible

~There are no muffler bearings, old joke...

~Double check the replaced line, if the fluid is still low after the replacement; you still have a leak somewhere.

~The only relation to smoke from the tailpipe and adding power steering fluid that I could think of would be that the power steering pump for whatever reason is providing enough resistance that when the engine accomodates that it puffs smoke.

~That being said, more than likely the smoke from the tailpipe is completely unrelated to the power steering pump needing fluid and you have an issue with the engine that just so happened to occur at the same time.

~You are also in the wrong sub-forum, this is for 4th Gen 4Runners ('03~'09) you want 3rd Gen ('95~'02)

In my head I can't remember if that one has an idle up vsv. I don't think so. Drop the skid plate, and double check for ps fluid leaks.

1. I feel he will find there is not a relation.
2. The skid plate possibly w/n cleaned good and possibly a leak still.
3. Time should solve the matter.
4. His 04 (vs 94) and my 07 are new to us and we felt we knew better.
5. His 04 was traded to him for some work due to a transmission problem he might need to check for a leak there also.

there is a valve on the bottom of the reservoir from what i remember. it has two vacuum lines running to it. i'm not sure what they do. i broke one of the nipples on mine and plugged the vac line. i assume it was some kind of vent. never had an issue. i'd imagine if the valve failed you could suck in some power steering fluid.

The gen4 air pump IS the back side of the power steering pump. If the seal leaks it may somehow get in the air pump that pumps extra air into exhaust on start up for smog purposes.

With the corrections of year model 04, the right hole, additional connections vs fluid lines, low fluid w/o leaks and knowing the exhaust is affected, I feel your info is helping us to make progress. Can you think of links or part names that might lead us to more helpful info???

Such as: "If the seal leaks it may somehow get in the air pump that pumps extra air into exhaust on start up for smog purposes." Can you share more or what would you suggest we search?

Follow-up:

The problem was the Idle Pressure Switch (145.00), attached to the bottom of the power steering pump (to control the Idle?). Can someone post a pic or link that shows this valve as a future ref? Can someone comment on the true need of this valve, since one poster plugged his broken part with no ill affects “that we know of"? My 07 V6 SR5 2WD’s power steering pump d/n look related.
