What color to paint these factory wheels?

I DEFINITELY do not love them.. The problem is they are the only 16 inch 6 lug hub centric wheels in my area that were for sale. I'll see if I can unload the. I actually thought they were the split 3 spoke from the pictures the person sent me, but when I got them in my hands they were different.. Still needed 16s because the tires I am looking into are actually cheaper even with purchasing the rims. I also want to do the tundra breaks soon so I needed the 16s rather than the current 15s
 
If you're jonesing for new 16" tires, and you're willing to pay to have them mounted twice, then clean up these rims, shoot them black so they disappear and get yo tires

TejasR - OEM Alloy rims look much better, than steel / glad your seeing this.
- I have the split 3 spoke 16" rims on my 2000 4Runner SR5 / so probably going with 199's brakes, instead of 231mm upgrade.
- since original owner had dealer install new 16" BFG's, two months before trading in / and I drive less than 5,000 miles per year
- and purchase Gen5 factory takeoffs, 17" alloys for summer

I did some research back when I was wrestling with decision, and found a few guys that went with the 1/4" spacers. However, on the advice of others and making some measurements, I decided the 1/4" spacer was a bad idea. There are basically, 2 types of rims-- hub centric and lug centric. Most stock rims are hub centric where the rim seating and weight bearing are provided by a 1/4" lip on the hub which mate with the rim. If you put a 1/4" spacer on the hub you loose this weight and alignment point. the entire weight will now sit on the lugs--- which the stock rims weren't designed to do. It's probably fine, however I go off road and I didn't want to be the one to discover that this became a weak joint! As well as loosing this hub contact, you loose 1/4" lug thread depth. Not a great idea seeing that all weight will now be carried by the lugs! Others use 1.5 wheel spacers which is a totally different matter. These are designed with the hub lip and they utilize their own lugs. I didn't want to go with spacers, as there has been a couple of spacer failures (do a search on this site).
The other option--- grinding the inside of the rims--- really not a great idea...

I ended up replacing my rims with newer LTD's---- I paid $175 for 4 and sold my split 3's for $150. I refinished the new rims and painted them a colour I wanted.

I strongly advise you read through BFAD write up on this---- if you're interested in the 199's he mentions them in the thread. This is the gold standard on this conversion.

Well I have decided to paint them regardless of if I keep them. I did a metallic gray with silver flake in it. Penny for your thoughts?

I see the odd 4Runner with steel rims, and if I could have found some, I probably would have used them for Winters. However, that would have possibly, changed my decisions on which TBU upgrade I went with... Most I've seen were either rusty or pretty banged up! Yours look great! It would be nice to see them on your truck---lets see some pics!

The great thing about steel, is there's less prep work than alloy. I ended up re-finishing 4 sets of alloys over 4 years and it was a lot of work. My original LTD rims are starting to look sad again so I think I'm in for number 5 this Spring. This was the 3rd set I did and they were I pretty good shape when I got them with vurturly no pitting of the alloy. Stripping them and polishing them was lots of work but 2 years on, the CC has lost its lustre and is starting to peel in places. I may paint them, as I've had greater success with this.
 
I like the bronze look. I'd like to go a little more of a copper but it'll do for now

I'll be mounting these on some new 265/75R16s this week. I'll post a picture after! Thanks for the encouragement dude!
 
Finally got some skins on the 4runner! 265/75r16s - 32s. I love them! I think the color turned out to be perfect for the evergreen pearl. Unfortunately one of the wheels I bought is warped despite my best efforts. It's only noticeable at 65+

warped, that sucks. I guess that's more of a possibility with steelies... however, they look great! Keep an eye out for a single, and use the warped one for a spare...
