What do the silver center pieces on the front and rear bumpers signify?

Every so often I see a 4th gen with a center section on the front and rear bumpers painted silver. I feel like I've seen it on SR5s and Limiteds so it obviously isn't specific to one of the models. Is this indicative of a specific option or was it an aesthetic option of some sort?

Pretty sure it was an 03-05 model thing. Mine is 04 and has it, but I don't see then on 06-09

I thought is was on the sport editions only (silver on the bumpers & silver colored roof racks) but I see the 2nd picture looks like an SR5? I hated it and had my rear one painted. Kept the front for awhile as I had silver painted skids and it kinda flowed like that.

I had it on my 2004 SR5 V8... Painted it black but now the new trails have it. Who knows

It breaks up the large faceless front and rear ends and gives it a bit of a truck like flair? It's probably more aesthetic than aerodynamic.

Original owner? Looks like it's been replaced or removed and resprayed.

I feel pretty sure that it's the light. The body surface changes a lot at the corner of the front bumper. The reflection is much more noticeable on a silver vehicle.

OK, must be the pic. Seems metallic colors show a lot of variation on different surfaces (metal vs. plastic).

My 1st '03, was an SR5, early edition with the grey cladding, so both front and rear bumpers were all grey even though the vehicle was Titanium.

The '03 Limited I now have has the body color matched trim, Dark Blue, and it has the silver trim pieces on both the front and rear bumpers.
