It is just the faceplate so I actually still have use of the space in the cubby. It connects to the radio via a cat-6 cable with ethernet - type plugs.

I keep my garage door opener in there.

My keltec P3at sits in the center next to the cig lighter... then right back on me when I get to wherever I'm going.

You know the one I mean - the one under the HVAC controls and in front of the cup holders.

Too small to put anything in there. If that pocket was deeper you could keep a lot of things there but that cheap little pop out compartment is pretty much useless. I pulled mine off. I'm thinking of rigging up a way to mount my GPS unit there so I can have it hooked up all the time (I've decided I don't need in-dash nav at this time.)

Anyone else come up with a creative use of this space? How deep is the area behind there? I presume if it was deep enough to put in a real compartment, Toyota would have done so. Too bad, it would make a great place to mount an auxiliary radio (CB or HAM.)

I keep my Nuvi 3790LMT GPS in there, perfect hiding and convenient place. It has a thinn leather pouch, fits perfectly.

I've routed my iPod cable back there. I can store the Ipod with no issues.

Me too. Aftermarket head unit with ipod cable; ipod classic fits in there.
