What do you guys think of this undercarriage? Too much rust to buy?

Looking at a 2014 SR5 that has spent most of its life in Idaho. I used to own a 3rd gen and 4th gen and those were both pretty clean...wondering if you guys would steer clear of this one based on the attached pictures.

Considering it was driven in Idaho, that's probably normal with all the salt they put on the roads. But if you can find one from the south I would say that would be much better. That would be a lot of rust in Texas.

That's all surface rust, not like it has giant holes eaten in it

I agree too about the surface rust. Looks like some dirt too. A power wash and a wire brush then some spray paint would take care of it. If you take a screwdriver and poke around as long as it doesn’t go through or big chunks come off it’s fine.

It depends. Can you find one in better condition at the same price? If I could that's what I'd do.

For me (in the PNW) I'd pass, but for a to-be Utah car that's less than what it would have been had it lived it's whole life in Utah or Colorado

Are you positive it was mostly driven in Idaho? My other car (not the 4Runner) has only ever been registered in Washington State but it's spent 5 of it's 7 years on the East Coast. According to Carfax, it is a Washington only car.

Secondly, we bought our 4Runner recently with a little less surface rust than that and I spent a Saturday morning underneath it wire wheeling the rust off then applied naval jelly and let it sit during lunch. After lunch, went back under with some paint that says it stops rust and painted over the whole frame. You could do that on this particular vehicle.

Exactly. You should see my 10 year old Illinois truck.

My 2015 with 90k miles on, which spent its life in MN looks like that. Like everyone says clean it well, wire brush it and apply either the POR15 or spray paint it.

I live in north Idaho and that amount of surface rust would occur in about a month if driven an average amount. They now salt the roads with either sodium chloride brine via spray or solid rock salt multiple times daily irregardless of weather.
