What do you put in your roof rack?

My 4R is much bigger than my last few vehicles...
and now that I have a cargo trailer,
I haven't had to use the roof rack since I got it.

But if I do use it, it will be for the occasional trip to the home center...
or for a long overdue camping trip.

And I would like to get a basket-style rack,
but it WOULD just be for looks.

Depends on what I'm doing. Always have a 40 inch amber bar year round. But on our trip it holds my RTT. When we do single/two day excursions it holds fuel and some gear.
Other than that home depot runs I use it to haul big items. Wife uses it for the same thing when she goes and buys furniture we don't need.
Have used it as a shooting platform as well and has come in handy for a farther down range shot.

Don't have any pictures with the rack loaded, but I do mount my jack, axe and shovel up there. Then I have a cargo bag that gets used sometimes. Gas cans (two Septre cans from Canada) and then bow cases / rifle cases, and other containers of camping gear go up top, depending on the trip.

I have Yakima crossbars as I can't see spending the $$$ for a rack. For that price I could buy a small trailer. I leave my Titan Rod Vault and my kayak mounts on the crossbars. The Titan Rod Vault allows me to put 3 fully assembled fly rods into it and transport them. Really comes in handy when I'm fishing for brook trout in the mountains and have to drive from pool to pool and not risk damaging my rods hanging out of the window or having to break them down.

Until I replace my rear bumper with a steel one that has a tire carrier, I am storing my spare tire in a Yakima Megawarrior roof rack along with a hi-lift jack and Escaper Buddies.

On a 3,000 mile trip to Utah earlier this month we ended with it loaded up like this: Two bins with kitchen supplies, two folding chairs, a roll-a-table, tent in a drybag, water jug, and large drybag with sleeping bags, roll-a-cots and sleeping pads.

My overlanding consists of commuting to work, and AAA got me covered in the recovery department, and I rather go to gas stations than carry jerry cans, and rather sleep in my apartment than in a rooftop tent, but thats just me...

Although, my 4runner doesn't look as cool as the other 4runners when I cruise the parking lot of my neighborhood REI.

I keep it empty mainly to save weight and save gas, and if I did mount things up there it is maxtrax, and a dry bag.
