What does this button do?

Hello all,

Just bought a 96 T4R. So far I love it. I was hoping you could help me out.

To the right of the dash illumination dimmer control knob is a rectangle hole in the dash. There is a small button on two wires in that hole that used to be filled in by a full sized switch or button I assume. What is it for? I don't see anything obvious happen when I press it. The vehicle also did not come with an owners manual that I know of.

Thanks!

Is there no button there now? The factory uses that location for the elocker. The factory button would say "rr diff lock." But I suppose the previous owner could've put some lights on and could've ran a switch to that spot, then took the lights when he sold it.

The plastic "look pretty" trim part is missing, but there is a button there hanging on wires. It looks like factory wiring. Would there be an indicator on the instrument panel when it is on?

Well maybe there is some aftermarket electronics in the vehicle. I have a red security light to the left of the instrument panel dimmer knob, it looks like it might not be factory. Anyone know?

Here is a pic of the button.

That red light is always on too. I am almost positive that is not a factory light.

remote start maybe?

from it's location and appearance I will venture a guess that it is an aftermarket alarm indicator light or possibly a remote start was added to the vehicle. (?)

There does seem to be something sticking out of your dash where the rear electric locker switch would be located-not sure if that is related or not.

I am presuming all Limiteds are automatics-but I don't know that for a fact. I have always been a manny tranny and SR5 trim level guy myself....

Enjoy your new ride and thanks for the picture to help us guess.

oh man... that looks like the disengage eject button for a quick escape for runnin from the PO-PO!!! LOL I have no idea...

valet switch?
The light looks to me to be an indicator light for a nonfactory alarm. The switch is either a valet switch or a switch to turn disable a remote start for when you are working on or having your vehicle worked on. In my Audi the valet was a momentary push button and the remote start was a 2 position switch. I never used the valet except when I did the initial install and you use it to program the options so I couldn't begin to tell you how it works. The remote start was either up for on or down to disable and you couldn't remote start it when off. Partially for security reasons but also as a double safety in case the hood-pin switch was stuck and you had your keys in your pocket and leaned against them and remote started your vehicle while working under the hood.

Did it come with a non-Toyota key fob for lock/unlock? I'd see if you can get a manufacturers name off of it. There also may be an antenna tucked behind your rearview mirror that might say "Directed" or a brand name on it that you could go to the companies sight and find more info. The antennas may only be on 2-way systems since the one ways don't have much range/need for range and just us an internal antenna in the alarm "brain"
