One other thing. The Toyota dealers around here all told the same story. We only get 2 LC's per Quarter. no more. If you want a different color etc, we have to buy it from another dealer. That costs more. So "we don't deal on them". We could easily sell 4 a month, we just can't get that many. When I did some research, I was told the same thing from dealers out of state. so I was satisfied that it was correct.
We bought from a wholesaler/broker through my work. Fleet sales etc. he reported the same thing when trying to get the LC. Easier to get an LX. But prices were really hard on them. Wish I would have found those prices. But again the wife didn't want the bigger car. So piece in the family.

At this point in my life, I want to play with it, and not work on it. I remember those days when I was exactly where you are. I have only bought 2 new cars in my life. But as I get older.............New sounds better all the time. Let someone else have the headache of fixing it. NOT as rewarding, but just the way it is. Probably because I never bought new in the past, I can now afford to retire, and pay someone else to do the dirty work. I APLAUD your attitude. It's what made us great. I'm just a kid at 63. My back and knees don't think so, but...........My wife is still waiting for me to grow up. I'll let you know when I discard my lightly used next toy. :thumb: I'm currently thinking about replacing one of my current motorcycles. Don't need a new one, just would like a different one. Maybe not. Just saw a 65 vette roadster on CL that I really should look at. That would be fun for a couple months.

Buying new cars that you can't afford is certainly one of the roads to no retirement.
Pay cash, not interest on depreciating assets. So many used vehicles with lots of life left for little or nothing. some can be loads of fun. Especially when you think about putting scratches on them. Doesn't matter if its in the parking lot, or on the trail.

Well I am very happy with my 2016 4Runner but there are some nice trucks being introduced for sure. The one that is really on the radar for me right now is that new Silverado with an inline 6 Duramax diesel. The Trailboss specifically. Hopefully I can hold off and save the money cuz I don't see my 4 wearing out in the next decade or so.

I am inclined to agree with your original start to the thread. I looked at other vehicles, never really been a Toyota fan, looked at the Jeep Wrangler Unlimited, thought about a used G or a used LR4... the 4Runner is priced right, easy to live with and has great off road ability while being easy to live with. there's not a lot of other options for locking rear diff body on frame etc. I have to say, and have said on a few other threads I totally love my 4Runner, even more than I expected to. I am very, very happy with it, though it is a little underpowered.

Well some older friends of mine were getting rid of an absolutely babied creampuff of an LR3 HSE, so I bought it. Holding onto the 4Runner still, but this is night and day from my stiff noisy old '02 SR5. Nice to have leather, heated seats, great stereo, etc. It can tow 7700lb also which is awesome, I play to sell my pop up camper this spring and get a 7x12 v nose extra tall enclosed trailer for my motorcycling.

Got it and threw some lift, 275/65-18 Falken AT's on new wheels. I think it looks great, I like how the interior rear folds totally flat all over. Spacious.

Not cheap to maintain obviously but still don't have any car or motorcycle payments so whatever. Whenever those air suspenders go you can buy the nice coil overs with OME springs from British Atlantic for $1200.

I had a great experience with one of these. Not cheap to own but LOVED it. It's never gonna replace my love for a 3rd Gen 4Runner, but I think I'm going the look into an LR4 with the 5.0 V8. I drove the latest Disco with the diesel. Great engine and interior, but I feel like they ruined the exterior in pursuit of modern styling.

I haven't calculated since I put the 35s on, but I'd guess I'm around 12-14ish. I'm also an extremely heavy pig, but the 4.88s make up for it enough that I really don't care. It's a wheeling rig.

OP: I have a Tacoma for home depot runs, a 97 Jetta TDI for commuting, and the 4runner for fun. Go pick up a late 90s car for cheap for commuting (I only paid 2k for my Jetta and I get 41 mpg) then start modifying the 4runner for more fun. Test it's limits more. Find some groups to go out with and push your comfort zone. Gears alone made 4.0 come back to life with all the weight and gear I'm pushing around. I'd guess I'm around 6k lbs right now between all the steel and bigger rubber. She can still pull 80-85 on the freeway easily (although uphill I do get a little slower). I spent 2 years playing on fire roads and black diamond (harder) sections. Now I'm about to start exploring the rock crawling areas and learning new skills that have me questioning my sanity. It's a hell of a rush climbing a waterfall with a 3 foot step up to start.

My 4Runner gets about 12-14mpg around town. Lots of stoplights and it takes some gas to get those E-load tires up and rolling. If I set the cruise control to 70mph on the stretch of I-5 between Oceanside and San Clemente, I can get about 19mpg (the computer indicates 21 but I know that's optimistic). I'll also get passed constantly by people doing 80-85.

I'm assuming that if I replaced my 4R with a Land Rover LR4, my fuel economy numbers would stay about the same, only I'd be required to use premium gas instead of regular. Doh...

I'm past the point in life of wanting a late-90s beater for a daily driver. I do require a modicum of modern creature comforts.

OTOH, I'm not interested in going any more extreme with my 4Runner - or whatever I might choose to replace it with some day. The most technical trail I've ever driven was Fins 'n' Things in Moab. I don't plan on pushing it any further than that.

Truth be told, I have a two car stable - my 4R and a Porsche 997. They're both awesome in their own special way. I find myself driving the 4R probably 80% of the time, mainly because my drive to work is pretty short and the 911's engine doesn't even warm up all the way. This is sort of what's driving my First World Problem - I have this cool car that I hardly ever drive and at the same time, I'm getting kinda tired of driving my 14 year old truck every day when it was never originally bought for this purpose. OTOH, both of my cars have pretty insignificant depreciation at this point so I'd be kinda nuts do make a change. At the rate people keep posting to the 997 board on Rennlist it's only a matter of time before they start going up in price...lol.

The Rover gets absolutely horrific gas mileage, though personally I’ve always considered part of the “luxury” of a luxury vehicle is being able to afford the go juice.
