What engine oil are you using? And introduction

Hi folks,

Allan here from WV :)

My first post and I was curious as to what you all are using for engine oil.

I have a 1997 white Limited 4Runner two-wheel drive with 137,000 miles.

The wife bought it used almost 3 years ago with 112,000 from her coworker and it was maintained very well by the previous owner who had it serviced mostly at the dealer with conventional oil every 3-5,000 miles. Unfortunately we had to have the trans. rebuilt at 120,000 miles, but other than that it runs well mechanically, no rust underneath, and still looks good.

Since we purchased it I have done 4 oil changes every 7,500 miles using a Fram Extended Guard oil filter.

1st oil change was with Valvoline Maxlife synthetic blend 5w-30
2nd was with Castrol Syntec 5w-30
3rd Penzoil Ultra 5w-30
and current fill with Castrol Edge 5w-30

I'm thinking about moving up to a heavy duty oil like Rotella T6 5w-40 for the next change.

Welcome to the forum!

I think all the oils you've used are fine. Why do you want to switch to the 40 weight?

What happened to your trans?

I'm thinking it will offer more cushion to the 5vz engine that may not have the tight tolerances that it had when new. The 5w-30 may be too thin for my driving style. I drive the 4Runner very hard when on the interstate and highways with constant 5200RPM wot's. I love the power in this 3.4V6 even compared to the 4.7 V8 in our Sequoia.

The trans got shredded while driving to Pittsburgh one weekend. I had an ATRA certified shop, Gillece's transmission, do the rebuild and they did a fantastic job. Previous owner had fluid changed regularly.

Welcome ! I use 5W30 Mobil 1 with an OEM filter every 10000 KM's or 6 months , what ever comes first . I wouldn't change to the 40 wt .

I would stick with the 5w30, or if you want to go to 10w30 it should be okay. I have only done one oil change on mine and used Mobil Clean 5k because it was $1.99/qt.

I may run it again or use Chevron Supreme which I have read is a very good oil. Look on bobistheoilguy.com for tons of info on oil.

I've never ran synthetic as I like to change my oil every 3k or 6 months (dont put many miles on) and synthetic would be a waste.

May want to switch to a different filter, I've read that Fram's arent very good. Stick with Puralator, Mobil1, Wix, or OEM.

I used frams for the first few oil changed in my runner till i got onto this website and seen the info and reviews on them. Then went to the K&N filter because i was told they have a cloth filter rather than paper like most filters do and collects dirt better than others.

Would i be better off just going with toyotas OEM oil filter rather than a K&N?

Changed all my fluids over to mobil 1 synthetic, change the engine oil/filter every 3500-4500 miles. Drive in alot of stop and go traffic...

You might have mistaken the Extended Guard XG3614 (the one I prefer)for the often ridiculed Fram orange can of death with card board end caps Extra Guard PH3614.

The Extended Guard is Fram's premium oil filter good for 10,000 mile filter change intervals.

It is very stout with metal end caps, wire mesh backing of 2 ply synthetic media, very thick canister, and a silicone anti-drain back valve. I've seen them cut open. On par with Mobil 1 Extended Perfromance and TRD oil filters.

I never hesitate to run the Extended Guard filters in my 4Runner and Sequoia for 1 year or 7,500 whichever comes first.

I've been running M1 with a Puralator PureOne filter and going 8000 miles/10 months inbetween changes and at 162k my truck still runs quiet,no leaks and I burn off a little over a half quart in that time period and that's very low for even a truck with less than a 100k on it.

Castol Full Syn 5w-30 and Napa Gold (Wix) filter. I used Castrol Synthetic Blend for the first 80k at 5k OCI. Blackstone UOA says I'm good to at least 7500 with the FullSyn but I usually do it between 6000 and 6500. 131K and I have never had to add between changes.

I use the Toyota own filter with Royal Purple 5-30. Change every 5k

5W-30 Valvoline SynPower and Mobil 1 filter (oversized). I do UOA with blackstone every change....I can't help myself. I change every 5000 miles and everything looks good. They tell me to go a little longer, and I might start. 130K miles currently.

I thinking I'm going to run the same oil in my sisters "new" '97 Limited with 233K miles. It's had conventional it's whole life, so I'm real curious to see what my first and second UOA look like for that beast.
