What gear oil? V8 4th gen 4x4

I dont tow, or very rarely anyways, maybe 2x a yr. Moderate off raoding. Should I spend the $$ on syn or just run dyno and change it more often? What would you do if it was yours and why. thanks guys

Toyota requires synthetic 75w-90 and i wouldnt run anything less. Personally i run 90w-135. Little heaver, keeps driveline quieter, probably hurts my mileage...

Used the Mobil 1 75w90 LS myself. From the research, looks like 30k is a good interval either way.

I think its dino from the factory tho with LS additiv? If you go dino, just make sure its LS (limited slip).

I've always been a fan of Valvoline syn blend too.

The only version of the 4th gen 4R that need the LS additive is the Trail Edition for the rear locker. Otherwise the LS additive is not necessary. All 4th gen 4R except for the (TE) have open differentials.

The LS additive is not necessary (can be used, but not required) for any 4th generation including the Trail Edition. The TE has an electronic diff locker, not a limited slip (LS) differential with clutch packs.

Just changed the front and rear diffs and transfer case fluids to Redline's 75W-90 Synthetic and I can honestly say that I've never handled a more slippery gear oil in my life!

The 2007 4Runner Sport 4 x 4 feels as if it glides across the road's surface with barely any hint of friction.

I got turned on to Redline while changing the fluids in my Harley Road King Classic where the tranny and primary were incredibly smooth shifting with a lot less noise.

I plan on leaving the Redline in the 4Runner's diffs and transfer case a minimum of 30K miles... maybe a whole lot longer.

Getting ready to do the same thing- I guess Amsoil 75W90 it will be unless someone has a better option. I do like the Motul and Motorex oils but they are hard to find.

I know the general idea of gear oil with different ratings for viscosity under certain temperatures... can anyone tell me if there’s any specific gear oil that would be best for running an 07 SR5 4WD in Phoenix, Arizona? I hear the standard for the T4R is 75W-85 but we get temps up to 120 over the summer, it’ll be at 111 by this weekend. Thanks for the recommendations!

AFAICT, and I'm not sure if the difference matters or not, Toyota specifies API GL–5 SAE 75W–85 (per TSB DL003-07) in the front and rear differentials and it matters if you have a limited slip diff or not in the rear, and API GL-5 SAE 75W-90 in the transfer case.

Prior to the TSB Toyota factory service manual specified API GL-5 API GL–5 SAE 90 front and rear diffs in climates above 0 deg F and SAE 80 or 80W-90 in colder.

Not trying to be disrespectful, but why do you say Toyota requires synthetic. I have an 04 and specs do not mention synthetic. I am aware of the TSB DL003-007 for synthetic 75W85 but didn’t think it was requirement and was only recommended b/c Dino and weight difficult to find. ??? I can actually find original spec Toyota brand oil at one dealership which is shocking after calling several. Some dealerships using synthetic for my VIN and others using conventional. Curious your thoughts.
