What gen is the best for off-roading?

I think it would be stupid to try in a stock 4th gen (especially 2wd) but I would wait for a 3" lift and 285's to do that, regardless if it was 3rd gen or 4th
The tree wasn't the problem,I didn't have much more of the trail on the passenger side tho and that was as tight as I could angle it.

personally I like either the 1st gen or 2nd gen. Havent been in a 4th gen off road yet. I used to take my 2nd gen all the time out on the HUMMVE trails with a club. i didnt have to lift it. The only thing i did to it was put on 32x10s i believe (been awhile). i did have the ujoint on the rear drive shaft well lets say explode. but that was the only real problem i had with it.
But as severl people have stated earlier.
im lookiong to get another 2nd gen as alot of aftermarket parts are now availbe for it and i had a horindus seperation from my first one (it was stolen)

I voted for the 3rd gen (with locker) simply because I have seen some of the amazing things those vehicles can do. That being said, I feel I have to defend the 4th gen, because it gets a lot of negative comments.
Obviously, no one is going to go sloshing through 3 foot deep water or plunging through red clay mud with a nice 4th gen that they are trying to take care of. However, I use mine (with a Daystar kit and some upsized tires) to get to and from hunting property in the middle of the woods. The trails aren't that hard, but you could not do them in 2wd, and you need some clearance. My 4R has never even hesitated. Not to mention you would be hard pressed to find anything as smooth and nice to ride in off road as the 4th gen 4Runner. I have owned other 4x4 vehicles, and nothing comes close. There are more capable vehicles than the 4th gen, but I will leave my full-size pickup-driving friends in the dust all day long.

I'm going to say the 4th gen, but that's because I have been in my Dad's 04 on numerous trips through some crazy areas in Montana when I visit them out there. I will be getting it from him next spring as he wants a newer 4R. He has larger than stock (not sure the size) BFG AT's on it. The majority of the miles on his 4R are on unpaved surfaces, but what's amazing is once your on the road it rides smooth as silk, no rattles, vibrations, out of alignment pulling, nothing. I'm 37 and live about an hour away from Uwharrie National Forest which has some nice ORV trails, so the 04 4R will continue to see some off road and camping use.

Ive done that trail and obstical in my 04 on STREET tires, lol the Center Diff. Lock works awesome.

Just an opinion, shouldn't matter to everyone else. A friend of mine has a 99' 4WD and there good looking, it has the classic Runner look but, more modernerated, if thats a word? It performs its duties pretty well off road dirt, snow, rain, mud, you name it. Dont get me wrong 4th gen is b
****in'. Then again, I think all Runners have that capability. Toppin it all off I think they all have their ups and downs. No need to say which one is better and puke on each other. :repuke:

Well, I currently wheel my 1st gen. mostly on rocks ( hard to find in Fla. but a quick trip to the mountians solves that problem )
I cannot really say about the wheeling abilities of the other years.
I have either owned or currently owned 1st, 2nd & 3rd gens.
I find myself driving the 1st gen. most of the time. I like the "wind in my hair" feel, hence the screen name and I have a choice of driving any one of 6 vehicles....
67 Impala convertible, 79 El Camino, 87 4Runner, 92 Stanza, 95 T100, 97 4Runner.
Not to mention the company truck....
That may change if I get that 99 4x4 limited supercharged 4Runner I have my eye on....
