What goes in this compartment?

Newbie here.

Looked at a 2003 4Runner today that was for sale.

In the rear, over the right rear tire (but in the passenger compartment), there was a small compartment, about 14" long by about 5" wide. Inside the compartment were some flat, black pieces of fabric that looked like they might be used for tying something down. The jack and tools for the jack were in a compartment on the left side of the car. The owner couldn't tell me what should be in this compartment and didn't have the manual.

Any idea what goes there?

(approximate dimensions of compartment might be off somewhat)

Tow hitch. At least that was in my 04 when bought brand new. Straps where mounted in there also.

Theres a toyota first aid kit that is design to fit there. Might be a cool thing to have, some of us take that part out and hide amplifiers there.

Hmmm I think I know where you're talking about but mine doesn't have straps.

I think in the manual it it's just labeled as storage. My used runner didn't have anything in it, I keep a set of jumper cables in there at the moment in case I need to help someone out

Same here. I just keep my cables in there. Straps woukd be nice though cause when I put my hitch ball mount in there, it popped the cover off when turning...:banghead:

I think the straps where for the early gen4 and certain models. My 08 didn't have strap installed.

My previous 04 new off the lot had the straps installed on the sr5 model w/ a factory hitch in there. Possible cause it had the load carry hitch and tow package plug in for the wiring harness.

Other than that, it's a storage compartment since they already had them molded for all models.

A tow hitch makes the most sense. You would want to strap that down so the straps make sense.
