What happened to all of the hitch mounted tire carriers?

This looks great! How hard is it to put on and take off? I would have to remove mine when I am not offroading.

It's not hard honestly. Probably like 5min total if even that. At the end there's a wedge lock that has to be tightened and loosened to get it on or off. You run a ratchet or impact wrench with an extension and 3/8 socket. Use the hex key it comes with, and put it in the bolt at the wedge lock, loosen it until it wiggles freely (don't actually remove the bolt, just want it so it's loose). Then just pull it out. Do the reverse to tighten it to prevent shake when off-roading or driving.

Why do you want to keep it off? Are you planning to keep the spare underneath when off-roading as well? I took mine out because it would rub at times in areas. Just curious if there's a specific reason or not.

Thank you for that info. Reason being is I have to do a lot of city driving/ parallel parking and need to access my hatch 6-8 times a day. Having it on all the time would really limit my ability to park in certain areas (parking is tight). Same reason I got the hefty rear bumper with no swing outs... just won't work for me at this time. I currently run the spare in the stock location and ideally want it moved out from underneath and I also want to step up to 34s.

What type of rim is the spare that comes with the new 2018 4Runners? Especially the TRD Pro model.

Black steel, 17x7. Ltd may be different (?) but SR5, OR, and Pro all come with that one.

I run the Detours Knucklebone. It came out to $307 shipped. Folds down 40 degrees so I can still open the back and get the sliding tray out most of the way.

Believe he sells it where it'll go 90 or 100% down, as well as swing out. Goes right into the hitch, tightens from the inside to prevent shaking. Only downside if you want to use your hitch, such as the Wilco versions do, there isn't a connection at the end of the carrier.

Wow, that looks really good. I have no use for it (my 285 lives happily underneath the truck), but I like it. I'd go that route if I wanted a rear mounted tire.

Gypsy garage TN made this for me and is debating on making them ready to assemble or complete.. shoot [email protected] an email so he can gauge interest. Generation 4runner doesn't matter I don't believe..

Mine is welded to the frame, and removable. And you retain use of your hitch.

It only sticks out a tad from the hitch. Haven’t noticed anything yet.

I actually am going to use one of his though being my motorcycle lighting I did to light the plate didn't handle offroading too well, and his looks much better.

I haven't relocated it. I never really used it anyways honestly, so it wasn't hard getting used to the tire there.

It honestly depends as you can choose that. The top of the carrier is adjustable to allow up to a 40" tire setup. It uses a retaining bolt system to allow that, which is one thing I was hesitant about, but to get around that I just drilled my bolts the whole way through and then welded them, as well as welded the sliding "plate" to the carrier as well.

While he said there was definitely nothing to worry about, I'd rather just have piece of mind.

Here's the only real side view I have. I'm running a 285/70/17 setup.

I think I answered most of this to that other guy on Reddit, but no. With that said, I also did some other things to give me piece of mind. Being you've installed it, you'll know what I'm talking about.

The tire plate, I drilled my bolts the entire way through, rather than leave it as that pressure bolt style system. I then welded the nuts as well. I also welded the plate to the section that folds down. Just for less time, I also welded the bolts for the tire to the frame as well, that way if I had to change on the go, I wouldn't have to worry about them falling in the sand or anything like that.

Otherwise no. No wobble, no looseness, nothing. Love it.

I've been interested in possibly moving my spare to a different location and I don't really want/need a full blown rear bumper yet, so I found a few old posts about folding hitch mounted spare tire carriers. All of the suggested links are dead and Wilco seems to be the only company who offers anything and it's a $1200 unit! At that price, I may as well just spend the extra money for a bumper.

I guess my question is why did companies like CBI, SRQ, Tiretow, probably few others stop making hitch mounted spare tire carriers? Are they not safe? Difficult to manufacture? Not enough demand?

I got lucky and found my Offset Wilco for under $600 on Facebook. Best of luck with the search!

I highly recommend you guys checking out rigidarmor they make a clean hitch spare tire holder with the option/hole to mount a recovery shackle in the rear I’ll have mine soon I’ll post pics. You can find them on IG @rigidarmor or online rigidarmor.com and they are WAY more affordable then some out there but the product does not lack quality.. like most of you I’m not ready to go all out on a rear bumper... hope it helps

Just butt welding the ends of the tubing together for that offset seems pretty sketchy to me. Is it manufactured in the USA?
