Looks like the little flapper valve is gone and there is a shiny little stud where it probably used to be attached.
What happened to my fuel filler do-dad

he is talking about that little spring loaded cover flap that covers the small hole up where the gas station pump nozzle goes into.
its there to stop trash from getting into the gas tank and prevent splash backs of gas from coming up the filler neck and out of the gas cap if your doing something that could cause that

I thought it was a Fed required safety thing to keep gas from running out if the truck was flipped. Belt and suspenders in case the gas cap was destroyed in a roll-over. I swear I saw this somewhere but it sure sounds bogus now.
Anyway, I filled up with gas the other day and on my next start after the first shut down after fill up, the starter ran longer than average before the engine started. Spooked me, thinking some water in the gas, I went to put in some product to solve this problem. That's when I noticed the flapper missing, I'm sure it was there at fill up. It's real obvious.
Now I hope it is not messing up anything bouncing around in the bottom of the tank.

My 2004 doesn't have one of the flappers either, never thought twice about it, it didn't have one when I bought it last year, I'll have to look at the filler neck more closely to see if it looks like it had one at all.
Does anyone knows for sure if the 4th Gen had this flapper?
That all being said and asked, I don't think it would present a problem if it is down in the tank, I can't see it stopping up the fuel pickup screen.

Doesn't have one. That was the general consensus last time this question came up.
I just inspected my gas neck opening and I see no evidence whatsoever of there ever being a flapper in mine.
