what happens if KDSS no longer works?

If you don't fix it and it goes bad, the vehicle shuts itself down and via it's Bluetooth connection to your phone also bricks that and any other connected device until you pay out of pocket to have it towed to the dealership so they can unlock your vehicle like an Apple product. I'll be totally honest, the TRD PRO gets me laid a ton now, I can jump higher, run farther, troll harder, and enlarged my member at at LEAST 1-2mm.
