What if the taillights looked like these?

I like mine too.An added bonus is when your offroading or backing up ,you can see them in your side mirrors and helps to judge where your arse is.Alot of FJ wheelers commented they like theirs for that reason too.Same with the our headlights,gives you 4 corner points to judge from.
I'm sure some aftermarket company will come out with some with LED's at some time in the near future for those that don't like them. A team of Chinese engineers are probably working around the clock on them as we speak!

I am a fan of the tail lights how they are. It gives the truck a masculine rugged look.
I like them better as is.

I also enjoy how I can see them in my side view mirrors. It gives a good point or reference of where the corners of the vehicle are.
I was washing my T4R today, and I honestly think it looks better every time I study the details of the body. It will age well, IMO, much like the 3rd gen T4R has.

I would LOVE it if they were like the altered pic. Toyota went out on a limb with the new tail/headlights - very bold, so folks will likely either love them or hate them. I don't care for them, and in fact am going to buy one IN SPITE of the lights which I find to be very unattractive. I just don't think there was any reason to go that bold - the rest of the design was bold and fresh enough. I am going to try to "hide" mine with a brush guard, which I need to protect from deer anyway. BTW - I've seen a thread on here about brush guards not helping against deer - this is hogwash. I live in the MOST densely populated white-tail area in the world (central TX) and it makes a huge difference IF you get a heavy duty version. It's true there are some wimpy ones that are for looks only that don't do the job. Trouble I see is not too many folks are putting out brush guards for these...yet.

I too like them the way they are. At first it wasn't my favorite design, but after owning the truck for 7 months I think it looks good and doesn't look like everything else on the road.
After looking at your side by side comparison, I definitely think the tail lights that stick out look better.

I like the 5th gen the way it is but I am partial to the TE model since the Limited just isn't my style and the tail lights aren't bad IMO and I don't own a 5th gen but someday.
I do notice that most of the 5th gen haters are 4th gen owners but the 3rd gen crowd seems to really like the 5th gen from the comments I see around here.

I agree that it's styling has greatly improved over the 4th Gen... and I felt that way before becoming a 5th Gen owner.
I was torn between getting a used 4th Gen and the 5th just a couple months ago.
4th Pros: Would have had a lot more money left to put into it (Lift, Sliders, Navigation).
4th Cons: Doesnt' look as sharp as the 5th (even with the lift, sliders, and navigation).

I've always looked at the 4Runner as a close but needs some touches. The stock 3rd and 4th gens all looked weird and wimpy stock. Noses pointing down, small street tires etc. The best looking stock 4Runner was the 3rd gens and the 5th's seem to have that same trait, hence the 3rd gens interest. There seems to be those that like a more squared off, box look vs. those who like the more streamlined curved look and we're seeing that taste difference in who likes and dislikes the new style.
Personally, I love all 4Runners when lifted a little with tires and off-road touches. But stock, let's face it, in terms of the stock ugly quotient, 3rd, then the 5th, and winning hands down the 4th. But put a lift and tires on em and they all look awesome.
As bumpers and more options hit the market for this brand new body, I think it'll see the love like past gens.

I must admit that when I first saw the 5th gen, I was really not very happy with the way the headlights/tail lights looked. However, the rest of the styling was awesome for me so I bought the 5th gen. (Traded in my 4th gen). I've now had my 5th gen for about 3 months, and I agree with the others here that the usefulness of being able to see "where my truck" is has REALLY come in handy. I use the tailights to judge all the time now, as well as the backup camera. So, I think it's much like a great beer. The lights are simply an "acquired" taste 
As an owner of a 3rd, 4th and now 5th - I'd say Toyota is doing a great job evolving the 4runner...

Now I love the look, especially with more aggressive tires. Could of gotten the 4th a few years ago, but thought it looked horrible. Really wanted a 4r too. Just couldn't get over how feminine the 4th gen looked so was forced to pick a Pathfinder instead.
Lopping off a bit of the taillights in no way makes the 5th gen like the 4th gen. If it were that easy, everyone would be doing it. Then again, we'd have to do the headlight protrusions too!
