What inpired you to buy a Runner?

After doing lots of research on a car that would fit my budget after my old car died, the 4runner won. I have a 1999 LTD in black. Its pragmatic and pretty. I am looking forward to learning a bit about how to work on these cars myself, as a lot of it seems pretty straightforward from what I've read thus far.

I wanted something I could trail ride in that help 4 people but was compact enough to get through tight places. The search lead me to a 4 runner.

I got tired of trying to squeeze my 3/4 ton Ram down tight trails and rattling all the teeth outta my head! Love my T4R!

My mom has a 2002 Sr5 4runner and my dad had a Tacoma.
I was 10k upside down and I figure my 16 Trail premium will eat up the negative equity in no time!

If I end up doing any cool mods Ill probably keep it if not Ill trade out of it in 2-3 years.

You can look at it this way, too. My first was a new 1988, and I kept it for 18 years and put 305k miles on it. At some point, resale value became meaningless because I was keeping it until I couldn't drive it any longer (I'm happy with simple things). Next was a 2001 SR5, which now has 260k miles and is my wife's daily driver. So two 4Runners across more than a half-million miles, with VERY few repairs, makes the economics work out wonderfully. It's so nice to pay off a vehicle and continue driving it for 10 years. And those mileages are normal for a T4R. I also have a Scion xA with 200k+ as my drive-to-work car.

Getting ready to hopefully buy a 2018-19 TRD Off-Road soon. And when I do, I won't fret door dings and such. After all, there's 300k fun miles awaiting!

My 2nd gen is my first car. Got it at 17 yrs old in 2004. Was good price and mileage ($5000 @ 180K) in really good condition.

Fast forward 12 years and after marriage, a house paying off the 2011 Corolla and a new baby, my wife wanted a new car. She knew how to get me on board: "I think I want a new 4Runner" ....

Couple calls to buddies in the industry and boom. Brought home the 2016 Trail Premium.

She finally started down the Mod rabbit hole by saying "I think I want bigger tire's and black rims" to which I replied "well we're going to need a lift and some other things..."

I married the right lady.

Loved my Highlander. Used it for my DD and to tow a small camping trailer. Wanted something with the Toyota reliability, that could tow and the more I looked into all the mods I could do to make it great for camping the more I was sold.

The last six or seven cars we have bought have been Mercedes or BMW. Most recently, I had a six month old BMW that spent almost two of those months in the shop. As the clock was ticking toward lemon territory, I test drove a few other luxury SUVs, all fine cars, but none of them excited me. Then I came across one of those articles on the web "Cars Most Likely to make it to 400,000 miles" or something like that. The 4R was top of the list. I'd always liked them, but thought it would be a "downgrade". Had a free afternoon and test drove one on a whim. Felt an immediate emotional connection to the thing for some reason. In the weeks that followed, lurked here on the forums and you guys convinced me it would be a good decision. BMW opted to give me a replacement vehicle for the lemon instead of just buying back the old one. I drove it for a couple of weeks while I waited on the registration, etc. and then traded it in with 400 miles on it for my 4R.
Haven't regretted it a bit!

2 things. The fact that they stopped making 4.0 Cherokee's which are getting harder and harder to find decent ones ...and the fact that Toyotas generally are the most durable and long lasting cars one can buy.

Mine was from owning a fully built 99 Cherokee and 00 7.3 excursion. Figured the 4runner was best or both worlds.

Nissan discontinuing the Xterra and therefore abandoning customers. Toyota has shown they will not do this to their 4Runner customers.

Why?

I like to camp and travel. When my Honda Pilot finally died I knew I needed an off road vehicle. So many places I wanted to go, but could not get to.

Mods and making the vehicle unique is also fun. I love this forum and seeing what everybody else does.

And there is just something about a five speed automatic transmission that can not be beat.

I've mentioned it before I was sold on Toyota by my dad's 2005 Tacoma. Years of carting us four kids from rink to rink, lacrosse/soccer field to field. The countless trips of moving us in and out of dorms and/or houses at college. My dad's 1 hour commutes to and fro work. All the other random trips and mulch haulings ha. Etc. Etc. Now with over 200K, that Taco just runs and runs. The only significant issue was the frame (thanks for the consistency Toyota ha). Fortunately, the Taco was recalled. I knew that at the end of the day, I wanted reliability and utility like my dad's Taco. The 4Runner was the only and best choice.

There are three main reasons I'm driving a 4Runner (2008 4th gen SR5.

1. Between my folks, my sister and me, my family has had roughly 13 Toyota or Lexus vehicles over many, many years! Needless to say, I'm partial.

2. The 4Runner really suits my needs well - lots of hunting, modest off-roading, the occasional Nebraska snow storm, etc.

3. My previous vehicle, a Nissan Pathfinder, was at the end of its useful life and I was ready... see reason number 1!

They look cool, they're reliable and they don't need $7,500 worth of wheels, tires and lift like a Wrangler does :dance:

My brother bought six brand new 4Runners before me. He never kept them longer than 4 years. He missed out on their best feature...reliability.

I bought my first one new in 2000. Kept it for 16 years (225,000 miles).

Bought my second new one in 2005. I have had it 13 years and 166,000 miles.

I don't have one yet, but I think I want one generally because I started researching quality SUV's that are known for reliability and something more than "AWD".
