what is a fair price for tire installation?

i decided on getting the goodyear silent Armor tires for my 06 runner, and i'm pretty sure my mechanic cant beat the prices from discount tire.com, esp witht heir free shipping and rebate offers, so i wanted to know what is a fair price to pay for just the installation...there are a few goodyear dealers nearby, i just doubt anyone will beat the online price...
obviously i am going to check out the prices for the tires locally but wanted to get some input here first

Why don't you just call and find out the prices in your area? Seems like a no brainer because it can depend on your location. Mine? 15-20 per tire for mount and balance.
 
thanks guys...i am going to go to the local firestone place at some point this weekend and get the destination AT's...i was planning to get the GYWSA's from disc tire.com but the hassle of getting quotes for install etc is just not worth it...they want 148 each tire at firestone, and there may be rebates plus i think they do the roadforce balance...i called the mechanic i use for repairs and he wanted 255 each for the GYWSA, and then wanted 30 each for install if i brought him the tires and he didnt have a roadforce balance machine...i figure the rest of the places around here that sell tires will be the same, so to save the hassle i'm going to get the destinations...the reviews on them are solid, and the price is right...and they look pretty cool too
 
If you bought the tires from Discount Tires online, take your receipt and ask any Discount Tire shop how much they charge to mount and balance those tires.
 
thanks again, theres no discount tire center nearby, not even within 50 miles...do the firestones suck or something? i thought they were well reviewed, at least what i read they sounded good enough...please let me know if im making a mistake..

There have been a lot of positive comments on the Firestone AT's...both here and on 120. Actually I can't recall reading any negative comments on that tire to speak of, and it's one I've considered strongly so I was paying attention.
 
If I'm not mistaken the Firestones and the top rated a/t tire on tirerack, it just doesn't seem like it gets as much love around here since it has a very timid looking tread.

thanks buddy...at this point im just tired of shopping, it looks pretty good to me...
i'll let you guys know how it goes, i hope i can get them on this weekend
 
I've been shopping for 4 months now. Firestone Destination AT's are where I'm going when I get my wheel issues fixed.

frustrating isnt it? revo's are great, but they get loud as they wear; BFG AT KO's arnet in the right size for my rig; pirelli scorpions are too expensive; michelin LTX At's get poor ratings on wear and mileage...and the list goes on..i just want to be done with it..
 
I SOOO feel your pain man! It's been 4x as bad for me, as my Dad is getting tires on his 4Runner as well, plus his fiancee's Xterra and Volvo wagon too. I've had to research all of this with 3 different goals in mind (at least the Xterra is getting the exact same thing as I am).
 
well i'm glad to read some good stuff about the tires, thanks chaz, you've been a big help to me this week. i finally got the time today to get an appt at the firestone place, when i called in though the tech told me that no-one had the tires, that he would need to get them delivered next week from the whouse. then he called me back later in the day and said he found 4 and they would be in the store tomorrow, so i set an appt for sat AM. i also asked for a quote on brake service, and they offered a fair price, 140 for the fronts and 160 for the rears, including pads, resurfacing the rotors etc etc...the GY mechanic where i was GOING to go wanted 200 for each end...so another good savings...i'm really pissed...the GY guys made me feel like he was doing me a favor and giving me a good deal..NOT
 
Well she's all set, all new shoes new brakes and new brake fluid, 1147.00 not inlcuding the $50 rebate, so around 1100 all in...I like the look of the tires, can't tell you how it rides yet because i havent had a chance to drive it...my station car is an old suburu stick shift so my wife got to drive the runner home form the shop....of course when i asked her how it drove she was like "huh?" it was normal...
i'll let y'all know as soon as i take for a spin
 
took it for a spin earlier and i really like it. i think the car rides smoother and is more insulated form little road zits and bumps, and they are very quiet, no tread noise at all. i am very pleased so far
