What is ECT and Overdrive for 3rz engine 4runner

I am planning to use ECT and Overdrive (O/D) on the hills is it recommend. my question is What is the ECT and Overdrive (O/D) use for?. what are the recommendations not to use?

O/D off is good for towing so you don't fry your transmission if it keeps shifting up and down. ECT is also good for towing, or just if you feel like driving a rocket ship. JK, it adjusts the shift points a little. I use mine all the time, I get better MPG's by about a mile per gallon.

Ideally, keep O/D on during normal conditions and use ECT at your own discretion.

Do you have an owners manual? If not, get on toyota.com and you can look up the owners manual section by section, which will tell you exactly what ECT and O/D are used for, as well as the best times to have them on/off.

The suggestion to check the owners manual is a good one, but I have a sneaking suspicion it'll just confuse you more.

Overdrive on any vehicle is a final transmission gear with a numerical ratio lower than one to one. The A340H transmission has an overdrive gear ratio of 0.71 to 1. Overdrive is great for keeping RPMs down during high speed cruising, but not so great for climbing long steep grades or towing heavy loads. You don't need to disable overdrive for every little hill you come across - unless you're heavily loaded or laboring up a seriously steep grade, you can ignore it.

ECT stands for Electronically Controlled Transmission. When you punch the ECT button, you instruct the truck to wait until higher in the RPM range to shift. It's useful while carefully towing a heavy load, but since you can accomplish the same thing by just putting your foot in the floor it's really kind of useless for unloaded driving.
