What is the best car alarm?

If you're only looking to just add remote start with a 2 way 1mile range LCD remote that's integrated with factory alarm I think compustar offers the best option.

Gshadow since you mentioned it have you installed one on 5th gen? How would you go about on programming/wiring one aux to roll down and up windows after arming alarm with the remote? Is there a way to assign/program an aux button to pulse a longer unlock pulse action to activate the windows down with the remote? Regarding the drone unit Is it really that straightforward install? Is there a longer cable thermister available so I can get better temp reading in the cabin?

Move some place that it isn't a concern. I used to live in Tampa and Atlanta. Now, I could leave the keys in the ignition in my driveway for months and have no problem.

Personally, if I had a 5th gen with smart key. This is what I would do.

Ft7200 remote start brain
Blade al vehicle interface
Drone mobile
Das sensor
Temp sensor
Touch rps
Ez go if you h have standard key, explained why below.

Program system system for oem alarm.
Hook up horn honk

Bam done.

Pros

Oem remote will remote start the truck.
Oem remote will arm and disarm system
dronemobile now can be setup to email or text you alerts.
Sign up for premium, you can get status and location of vehicle as well as lots of other features.

Cons
Oem remote can't unlock vehicle when running, but once you get close to vehicle and you stick your hand in the door vehicle unlocks, disarm and if it was started it will shut down so it can revalidate the rf Id from the oem key fob.

if you don't have smart key, ez go is a aftermarket rf Id remote. Tiny little guy that can unlock like a oem smarty key. As well as arm as you walk away from vehicle. Really cool. I use it on my 4th Gen all the time.

As for Windows, windows are not controlled via remote correct on 5th gen. If it can't be done from oem remote. It's not that easy to just program with the compustar. I will go to my cousins trick in 30 minutes and see if it does.

With that combo, you get oem security, remote start, unlimited range to control vehicle since it will be using Verizon lte to send you notifications via email and text. Das for shock impact or towing coverage. Temp sensor for obvious reasons. Now touch rps is a cool thing, it's a numbered keypad that you can set a pin number to and lock and unlock your vehicle. We all have locked the keys in the car one time or another. Vehicle can be off and arm or disarmed and running key pad will let you in! It also doubles as a owner paging device. Just touch the red button it will page the owner of the vehicle.

You want to change remotes, you can add it in easy. You want to add or subtract some modules and maybe add it in later? You can.

Not many brands can say this.

For these reasons and many many more, this is why I love compustar.
/rant thanks bye

Now that's not the proper attitude to take. Just because you can doesn't mean you should. Not everyone can live off the grid. There are billions of people out there that need or want extra security and added convenience of remote starting. I have been a statistic and vowed never to be one again since 1996.

So just checked my cousins 2013. That remote doesn't do anything with windows or rear hatch glass.

He has this remote.

Have the sr5 fob remote, if you press unlock and hold for 2--3 sec it will roll windows down and mooneoof as long you keep it pressed but not rear hatch it's not activated from factory. So you think is it possible to assign an aux for a timed pulse without any new wiring with compustar?

I didn't know that you can add the shock/Ft-das sensor on the remote start brain only. If that works with factory alarm then there is no reason to really get the complete remote start/alarm kit for all 5th gen because that's the only thing missing with factory alarm a 2 stage shock sensor/tilt/accelerometer.

The Only reason I suggested the bare minimum brain is to save money, if you get all those options installed in the shop it will cost you. Like you said the rest it's an easy upgrade to add the other accessories one by one, just plug it in their respective port and you can activate most features with the remote. Let the shop do the hard part and you do the add-on yourself easily.

Hard part is actually getting the customer in the shop. Install is the easy part lol. At least for me it is. Now about the windows. You will need a op500 programming module to assign the pulse time to one of the 8 poc (programmable output controls) to wired into the door unlock wire. It can be done. All it takes is time. So will the tail gate window. My 4th Gen has rear window roll up and down that took me a little while to figure out.

Did a 5th gen today. This one is a limited so no window automation.

I would think it would as simple as extending a auxiliary pulse to roll the windows up and down. You will need a programmer to set these things up.

Drone is straight forward install that requires some skill to know where and how to install it.

Honestly temp sensor is just a general temp. I don't think it's going to be calibrated to be 100% accurate.

Here's my install today 14 limited

I'll post a video up on how it works tomorrow.

Very nice! I'm looking into doing this on my '14 as well.

I have a couple questions though. Can you set up the remote start so it does not shut off when you disarm or open the door? Can the remote start take over if the vehicle is already running?

from what I have been told and from others, the bypass modules on these remote starters cant get around keeping the engine running once you open the door since I think its inherent to the engine ecu.

I imagine someone who had time could hack it so it wouldn't but most factory backed installers wont since it would void your remote start warranty.

Going to breathe some life into this stale thread....

All I want is remote start. I want to keep using the factory smart key, and don't want an aftermarket fob just to start the engine remotely. So, basically, do you know if it's possible to get a Viper smartstart ONLY, without getting the whole 9 yards viper security system install? I'm only going to use this in the winter, and having it accessible through the iPhone app is all I want.

sorry i didnt see this post.

you can do remote start only with the oem fob and have smart phone control too. why limit yourself to winters, it can cool down a hot car in summer too!

I have read that fortin bypass modules can. Fortin | Bypass modules, remote starters and alarm systems there are 3 major interface companies out there.

fortin Fortin | Bypass modules, remote starters and alarm systems
omega research then trilogix then bought out by DEI and turned into expresskit XpressKit.com - Interfacing the Past, Present and Future.
Analog Data Solutions aka ADS iDatalink - Home

I used all 3 in the beginning. Then trilogix had tons of failures. Moved to fortin and idatalink. then when technology went lights years ahead with the blade module from idatalink. i put all my eggs into the idatalink basket and never looked back.

idatalink's approach to start toyota and lexus is thru data. they do not offer take over since they want the vehicle to shut down after it has been remote started so it can revalidate the proximity key. this will eliminate error codes

each manufacture takes a different approach to this. i dont have experience with the fortin bypass module so i cant offer a expert opinion on that.

I wish aftermarket installers were factory backed. I think you might be thinking more along the lines of independently back by each individual dealership.

Little insight into aftermarket work performed thru dealership.
-as long as their hands are in the cookie jar. they make money on being the middle man. so a remote starter can cost to the dealership, example $300 + markup = consumer cost is $599
-where as you go to a quality independent installer you would probably pay the same price as the dealership pays.

hard part is, how do i know these guys are good? how do i know these guys know what they are doing? You dont, you have to trust your instincts from talking to the potential shop you choose. Ask others for referrals.

btw- there is no such thing as voiding your warranty. its such a loosely used term. Magnuson?Moss Warranty Act - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

video as promised on how a Compustar Remote Starter works with a 2014 Toyota 4Runner Limited with proximity key. click on the picture to load the video in a new window

I guess I probably didn't explain, I meant the remote start warranty if its installed by a 3rd party and not a factory authorized dealer/installer.

Well not to be a stickler but authorized is another loosely used term also. Since many remote start alarm companies do not have clean distribution channels. Anyone can be authorized as long as they have a resale certificate and a mailing address.

true, my Toyota dealer isn't even listed in the compustar authorized dealers but they only install compustars, since the warden has a 9000 series installed on her Tacoma.

have a friend at work that installs them and he is on the authorized list, but then again there is only 2 in town.

he's charging $200 less than the other one and the Toyota dealer.

take it all in stride.

You guys talking about the factory remote starter right? My bypass for the compustar keeps engine running even when the door is opened only shuts down if I step on brake without key in on.

Nice install,:thumb:I thought all 5th gen 4runner has this windows roll down automation with key fob or door key if activated with techstream.

you have the push start system or the ignition key system in yours?

if you have a key, then yes you open the door w/o the engine dying, if you have push start system, the engine dies upon door opening.

Well, that is good news. I have a Trail so I have a keyed ignition. Really looking like I will go with Compustar when I get back from vacation.
