What is the warmest blanket I can buy?

I want to buy some high quality blanket for winter camping and leave it in my roof top tent, I don't like sleeping bags plus I have two kids. What is the best out there for blankets?

We have some of their lighter weight comforters and they're supremely well made. Something with insulation will keep you much warmer than your standard blanket.

I know you said you don't like bags but those will be the best at keeping in your body heat.

Having said that, you need more than a warm blanket to retain heat. You need to start at the bottom and put down a barrier. Insulation will keep the cold from creeping through the bottom. Use rollable form and a space blanket to start with. I'd personally use bags and can't help with a blanket. Moisture is another battle so make sure it breathes...wool is good at this but lots of good synthetic materials out as well.

Why is it you don't like bags? Maybe you haven't had any that you like, most bags make people feel a bit claustrophobic. I went up to the sierras two years ago with my wife and then 7 month old. Temps dropped to the teens, sleeping in a tent on the ground. I had bought two of these Target : Expect More. Pay Less. and zipped together it was real nice. Kept us insulated but didn't feel like your typical cold weather bag as I could stretch and move around no problem. If needed throw a comforter on top and you'd be probably too hot.

Warmest blanket

So we have a bunch of blankets that we use around the house. In the Runner I just have a couple large black bath towels mostly to throw on the leather seats for whatever occasion arises. My wife has a collection of quilts, those are hard to beat for holding it warmth. I used to get these wool military surplus blankets at a place up in Shelby, Ohio. They were $10-&15 ea. and various sizes. Have one that I keep by the recliner, I've had it for probably thirty years. It's the "go to" blanket for the cats since it holds heat so well. Go to a military surplus store or online surplus, get 3-4 for very little $ and get some large thick ziplocks to seal them in.

My advice for you in this situation is this. If you can find a large Military Surplus store find the old style wool blankets(Get a few of them there great). Since you want to leave it in the RTT that can be the base layer. Next put on your sheets Etc and get a really good Down blanket. Again since you want to go this route that about the best I can think of. If layered correct it should run you out of that thing even in the middle of a snow storm.

Also- Since I just saw that down blanket buy Western Mountain- Not sure if you have or know about them but anything they make is just BA-Period. It's not cheap but you will have it a every long time! There quality is outstanding man, that's why its expensive and its all built in the Good ol USA so if you call them they can speak English, Amazing i know....

In my RTT I have 2 Wiggy's 0 degree rectangular sleeping bags zipped together to make one big bag. It's been very warm and I camp with two kids as well. As far as all this talk about an insulating base layer, I think the 3" foam mattress is a good enough insulator.

When camping with the kids I lay down Pendleton Wool Blankets on top of the sleeping mattress and then use high quality goose down sleeping bags opened up like blankets on top. The down "comforter" type of bags that are being put out are nice but a couple of nice down bags gives you the option of getting inside our using as a comforter when completely unzipped.

There's nothing better than a great quality sleeping bag. Remember to sleep in your underwear & not with your clothes on. They make you sweat & then you get colder. I have a 0* & a 25* bag. I like the 25* better because I sweat less.

I have two wool German military surplus blankets that I use for just about everything. When I camp out of my 4runner, I use a 20-degree sleeping bag. It's older, and is certainly not very high-end like a Wiggy's. But it's big and gives me room to move around. Anyway, one of those blankets folded inside the bag has kept me warm in a Minnesota winter.

There are quite a few of these types of blankets on the market nowadays - it's not like it once was, where all of them were 100% wool and all were genuine military issue, so you have to pick and choose. Find the highest percentage of stated wool content you can and stay away from everything that says "military-spec" (aka fake, not actually produced for or issued to any country's military, but instead made to look like military issued gear).

I got mine at Coleman's Military Surplus in PA. It's similar to the ones they have for sale now, but more green/brown than blue. Extremely heavy and very warm.

I have enough battery on board that I have used an electric blanket... just another option to consider.

I still own a quality bag, but I got tired of carrying around heavy blankets because they take up a lot of room.

That's how I keep warm, damn ya.

Rather than skinnin' my kind, I'd suggest double layering with a modest layer of down next to your skin covered by a thick Pendleton wool blanket. Will make ya sweat even when it's frigid.

Better some poor goose than me, dammit.
