What is this add-on button/switch?

I purchased my 2014 4Runner pre-owned from a dealer and don't know what this after market button/switch is for. Does anyone recognize what this is?

I have one similar.
It's so the dealership can leave the keys in it and remotely unlock the truck for test drives and maybe to reclaim the vehicle if payments aren't made... I dunno.

I need to remove mine, it flashes all the time and is very annoying.
I also bought mine pre-owned. Mine looks a little different, but is in the exact same spot.

Not my picture, but I found this exact card in my center console when I picked up my new 4Runner from the dealership.

Just like mine, it looks like the dealer alarm system (brand name is Karr) and if you don't add the extra alarm package option, they will just insert the disabling key.

Haven't thought of removing it though. So it does flash occasionally?

Did you buy from Stevinson? That's where I bought mine, and noticed this thing afterwards too. In looking around there lot, it looks like they put this on all of their vehicles (all had the KARR sticker in the driver side window).

Here's an article I found that explains it pretty well.

It bugs me that they have hacked into the factory wiring to install this POS. :mad2: I'm going to tell them to remove it (and repair or replace the affected wiring) at my first service appointment.

CRAP! after seeing this thread I got worried and looked under the dash of my 2016 SR5 bought new in Oct 2016---and there it is! Dealer never mentioned this had been installed. Mine is further under the plastic dash cowling so it isn't obvious, and if I saw it I would have thought it was OEM.

Anyone had theirs removed by the dealer? Just looking at that wire octopus connected to this POS, I certainly don't want to try removing it! Other than possible failure of the junk electronic device, any harm in just leaving it?

My 2014 had this, or something that appears identical. I'm pretty sure that it caused a check engine light at about 2,000 miles or so that just required a 'clear codes' through the OBDII port, but it did disable the 4x4 smarts and cruise control (dealer never found out what the root cause was and the error code didn't match anything in the books). After that I removed the pigtail switch, but left the rest of the spliced wiring alone. The vehicle wiring is obviously damaged during the connection process. In my opinion it was better to leave it intact vs. pulling it out and damaging it further at that point.

Yes, it bogus that dealers do this on brand new vehicles without telling the buyer. If they did, would you walk away? Ask them to remove the wiring, leaving it damaged? Ask for a lifetime harness warranty? How should the dealers make this right?

I would 100% walk away, or at the very best expect a nice discount.

I bought a new vehicle. Not a tampered with one.

Wires are one of the few things that can easily be ****ed with, and forever cause tons of minor (or major) issues. I want no one but myself, the people of my choosing, and Toyota to mess with them. Especially on a new vehicle.

Long story short, the dealership does not own my vehicle, I do.

Go back to the stealership and get them to remove that POS and replace the dash that they f'd up.

Also bought new from Stevinson in Oct 16' and found that POS under the dash after I signed the papers and got home. Was very pissed to say the least.
As I live in 200 miles from dealership was not going to go back to have them remove it.
Took pictures of how it was connected just in case car wouldn't start after it was removed and then took it out. Sucks to know I have all the wire taps under the dash but can live with it.
Though I did have a good experience buying from them and got a deal of over $3000 less than my local dealer would offer I would use them again. But next time will be sure to make it known to salesman I don't want it there and will check under the dash before signing any papers.

Wow, Stevinson is still doing this?! This summer I bought a used 2004 from the original purchaser who bought it from Stevinson and it had the same shitty KARR alarm.

Luckily, mine was easy to remove. Just unplugged everything. But all those shitty wire taps under my dash keep me up at night.

Wow, Stevinson is still doing this?! This summer I bought a used 2004 from the original purchaser who bought it from Stevinson and it had the same shitty KARR alarm.

And they still are. I was at the dealership today get an annoying rattle fixed that's been driving me crazy for the last year or so. Turns out the rattle was caused by this aftermarket KARR alarm that they'd put in. Even though I didn't purchase the alarm, they left the various components in the 4Runner when I bought it. Apparently, this crap isn't worth the effort for them to remove it when one declines buying it.

Below is my description of the rattle and their fix as noted on today's repair order.

Anyway, I was walking around the lot and noticed that they still seem to be putting these into all of their vehicles in inventory.
