Hi all:

I have 98 limited. There is a piece under the truck that runs length wise and covers some things underneath. It's made of some sort of fibre material. It's hard to tell because there so much undercoating on it.

Mine fell off the other day. Trying to find out what it's called and weather or not I really need it. What does it do? Other than stop crap from hitting the bottom of the truck?

Thanks!

is it plastic or metal? or is it the heat shield protecting the body from the temps on the cat.

i bet its just heat insulation for the cat.

I believe he's talking about the fibrous plastic shield on the left side of the frame, directly below the driver's front door, that has the "jacking point" wording on it, pointing to the oval hole. If so, it's more of a splash shield/debris guard for the fuel filter, lines, and transfer case area.

Thank you TakeitApart. I just checked it again. Yes - that is the one. It's in front of the gas tank shield.
Anybody know what it's called? Is it really needed?

As with any shield, I'm sure it's better to have it on than leave it off, but my bolts were rusted into the frame and they broke off about 6 months ago. One day I'll get them out and re-install it but for now mine is missing as well.

Thx again! Does anybody know what the part is called? Mine is torn at the front and back and I'm trying to see if I can find a replacement. Seems to be a little tricky to find online, without a part name or number.

I may have to Macgyver some thing to re-attached, if I can't find a replacement part.

OR - call the Stealership? Oy

If you call a good salvage yard they may be able to tell you. That piece protects the fuel line, fuel filter and a handful of other critical-looking items. I definitely wouldn't feel comfortable driving without it.

Here is a pic of the part

thx!!!
