What is this empty threaded hole under the hood?

Hi guys, while I was changing my spark plugs this weekend in my 2006 4Runner V6, I noticed this gold threaded hole that didn't have anything running to it. What is it?

Yes, driver side rear of engine (V6). I bought the car like this and have put 3000 miles on it with no codes or any issues. Those gold threads are pretty dirty so it doesn't look like anything was in there for a good while (maybe ever).

Looking at some pics of this engine online, I see most they all seem to have this gold threads exposed.

I have two V6 4runners with the same threaded holes and nothing in them. I assume it is used in another application such as a Tacoma for the braces. "Ticking valve" VSV is in front of the brace on that same side.

thank you for the confirmation that you have the same threaded holes.Looks like it's nothing to worry about.

San Francisco and the car does not see any off-road.

It's actually a very clean engine. That back portion is dusty and has never been wiped in 10yrs of duty.

It does almost exactly the same thing as the hypertension headlight striker.

"Ticking Valve" is the VSC-Vacuum Switching Valve that is in front of the rear support bracking on the driver side. Has two small hoses and a connector on it. Often people hear/complain about the ticking sound from the VSV as it switches and do a simple mod to quiet it down some. Not related to your question just a reference of the location of your picture.
