what is this for?

It looks to me like a photosensor, like those that turn on the lights when it gets dark or when you drive thru a tunnel. However, my truck does not do that, and I don't even have DRL. Any thoughts?

Yes, I have auto air, but I dont get why the auto a/c needs to know how bright it is outside. I thought the auto a/c uses a temp sensor in the cabin....

IF that is infact the ambient temp sensor then they usually put them up by the windshield because thats where it's the hottest.

I cant pop up Ligs link he posted to see what thats all about. Filters on my work comp wont allow me to some sites.

Actually, the cabin temp sensor is located just below and to the left of the steering column, behind those vents.....

It just says:


It is part of the automatic climate control system. It senses the intensity
of the sun coming in the windshield (and subsequently beating on your chest
and face) and adjusts the temp, fan speed and sets what vents to actuate in
order to cool down the front of your body!

I just checked lignum's link, and I disagree. For once, in auto mode the ACC only uses the "in your face" vents unless windshield defrost is selected. It does not switch between vents regardless of temperature. Plus, even in auto mode the desired temperature has to be manually input, so even if its 100 degrees outside, the a/c will only blow cold air if you tell it to. If you select "hot" it will comply and blow hot air. Thus I don't think the auto air uses the sunlight-intensity sensor to independently determine how cool to make it or which vents to use.

Auto air doesn't mean the air will change temp itself. Just the speed it is blowing. Does your auto air not do this. It is suppose to

Say if you bring it down to 65 it doesnt automaticly blow high then if you bring the temp up to 72 or higher the fan speed doesn't slow down. Keep in mind to do this the truck would need to already be cooled on the inside not as soon as you get in it as if it were sitting all day.

The only thing auto about it is the fact that it will change fan SPEED by itself
 
True, the fan speed varies depending on how close the desired temp is to the actual temp. Now that I know its ACC related, am gonna do an experiment. On a hot sunny day I will cover the sensor with a cool moist rag, turn on the a/c, wait a while for it to stabilize then remove the rag and see if the ACC responds. Thanks for the input guys.

Had that pretty much figured out off the bat. Question is (or was), what does it run/manage....
Sorry my thread title is misleading...
Haven't done the fan speed experiment yet...
