On my 2003 (V8), that electrical connector is hooked up to a horn that is part of the factory alarm system. The extra horn is mounted on the fender by that electrical connector. If your 4Runner does not have a factory alarm the connector is just part of the wiring harness that is unused for your particular vehicle. I would get some electrical tape and tape it up.

my car does have the VIP system installed...i've always wonder what that is. you're right, i should tape that up just incase.

It's still bugging me tho...maybe VIP equipped cars doesn't need to have that connected? Something was removed it seems.

I am not familiar with the VIP System. Is it a dealer installed alarm system as opposed to one installed by Toyota at the factory? On my 4Runner that connector is only hooked up to an extra horn for the alarm system. Perhaps your VIP System utilizes its own audible alarm or uses the horns mounted in front of the radiator and AC condenser. It is not uncommon for car makers to install a wiring harness with all the wires and connectors for all items that maybe installed in a particular vehicle. If a vehicle does not have a particular item/option, the wiring/connectors sit there unused.

The beauty of it is that it plugs into the factory wiring harness (in several locations), so there is no need to splice wires. Most aftermarket systems have more features than the VIP, so that's one reason to go with another product. Almost all of the features of the VIP are standard from the factory on a 4Runner Limited (the glass breakage sensor is the exception).

So does the VIP System use the horns mounted in front of the radiator and AC Condenser, or does it use a separate audible alarm unit? I think EDness is concerned that his vehicle is missing the extra horn that the electrical connector plugs into.

i know when i lock the car the beeping sound is from another horn, not the 2 horns in front of the AC. Not sure if that's standard or is it VIP only.

That is standard. Toyota uses a little piezo speaker for the keyless entry rather than the horn. In Toyota documentation, they call it the "buzzer". It makes a little nicer "beep" sound than than honking the horn.

I really appreciate that Toyota uses that extra speaker for the audible "beep" when you use the key fob to lock/unlock the doors. It's much better than vehicles that use the horn. It would cost Toyota less to build the vehicle using the horn, but in choosing not to go that route speaks well of Toyota design and engineering.
