What is your Air Fuel Ratio? Scan-Guage II

How long did it take to get to 14.5a/f?

Without the stop, mine took almost 1hr of driving

For that? I literally turned my 4Runner on and waited for the ScanGuage itself to turn on, and then I immediately took the picture. Still, even while driving around town it stays right around 14.3 or so. Also it's always on closed loop, unless I stomp on the skinny pedal and leave it at WOT, then it goes to open loop. But as soon as I let off the skinny pedal, it returns back to closed loop.

Mine is alway in Clsd loop also, but it's much more rich than that at start up.

What can cause this rich run?

So I reread the entire thread, and I noticed that you had posted the following:
"Name.... A/F
TXD.... 686AF101B4
RXF.... 044145B40000
RXD.... 2808
MTH.... 05BE00800000"

The coding that I plugged into my ScanGauge is similar, but there are some that are different, so I'm wondering if it could have been a simple error as plugging in the incorrect coding? The coding I used is the following:

TXD: 686AF10124
RXF: 04414524
RXD: 2808
MTH: 05B900800000
NAM: A/F

I hope this helps!

i just plugged that in as AFR on mine, and it came up as nothing... didn't even want to show anything.

I think 2001 and 99 codes are different...

99-00 vs 01-02 ECU's are managed a little different.

there's another code here for A/F that wasn't posted...

Air to Fuel Ratio (Lambda)
TXD: 686AF101B4
RXF: 044105B40000
RXD: 2808
MTH: 006400800000
NAM: AFL

EDIT...
I tried this lamba, gave me an 89...

I then tried the site's 'true' a/f ratio, and that gave the same as my a/f but with no decimal...
I think I have the right code, I noticed today I got on the pedal, and I went 14.1 way faster than I'm used to... IF this is the case, I'm going to try it tomorrow. hitting the skinny pedal to open then close the loop... maybe it'll trigger to run right.

So lets determine I have the gauge setup correctly and the computer really does see 12.1 a/f most of the time... what could take it so long to reach 14.7 ?

I don't think it's coding... I really do think I'm honestly running rich, the smell, the 14mpg on freeway with 32inch tires and 2 inch lift... I'd expect high 15-16 but not low 14... my wifes 97 gets 18 in town, and 19-20 on freeway. but only single cat and 97 so no wideband.

If you really think its running that rich you should beable to smell it at idle. If you put your hand in front of exhaust and it smells like gas after its fully warm and in closed loop than its running pretty rich. Also you should be getting a sulfer smell/build up in the cat running that rich.

If you going into closed loop than thats good. That means the ecu is reading the temps and moving into closed loop.

Have you monitored the o2 sensors to make sure they oscillating? A slow o2 can cause some rich issues without a CEL.

Few things that really cause rich run. Bad temp sensor causing you to stay in open loop. Bad or slow o2 sensors causing rich run. Dirty or bad maf not reading air correctly. Intake leak causing metered air not to get into the motor. Sparkplug/wires not firing causing unburned fuel.

I would replaced o2s, plugs, wires, clean maf and TB, make sure all hoses and lines have no leaks.

Did you look for exhaust leaks. Especially the O2 sensor gaskets and the two flange gaskets on either end of the CAT.

Your code is showing trans temp divided by 10. Its the wrong code...

-Charlie

funny you say that... it's not actually 10... but 12.9? ish... sure enough, I run 200 trans temp and i'm 15.3

I do this over and over, cold/hot/cold and every time I take the trans temp and divide it by the 'A/F' xguage, and I get 12.9 ish... it's so close and consistant, I think you right.

Whew... I thought I was going mad...

I'm off to research what this code is supposed to be for a 1999... it won't be the 2001-2002 codes, I'm sure it won't but it must be out there somewhere.

I'm running ISO... more > more > mode = ISO

https://www.scangauge.com/x-gauge-commands/iso-vpw/

I have tried ALL commands, for every bank... I don't think my 1999 cali with and O2 is a A/F ratio sensor...

this really bums me, oh well nothing I can do about the sensor.

but this does bring up my issue of a really thick/bad or too much gas smell... and 14mpg freeway... I'm back to the research board.

it does go in clsd lp so maybe not temp sensor
Dirty/bad maf... possible bad?? i know I cleaned it, thought I replaced it already, I'll have to dig up the receipts
just did my entire intake gaskets and hoses, sprayed starter fluid around the top of the engine to see if we get any rpm spike... none
new plugs and wires, to be honest, it's running the same before as after the old plugs and wires... not much of a difference in idle and mpg IIRC

I get a very rich smell at idle too. Every once in a while I get a p0420 and a CEL then the CEL goes away on its own. I too have a new Cat and new O2s. The difference is I'm getting 23 - 24 mpg average. Tracking with dash command adjusted for tire size.

ok, I was try'n ANY thing to get the O2 sensor to give a read on my scanguage...

I got the following to work

guage: O2 Sensor Bank 1 - Sensor 1
TXD: 686AF10114
RXF: 044105140000
RXD: 2808
MTH: 000100020000
Name: -O2
Notes: 0 to 99%

I'm reading 64 at idle after driving it... I'll have to get it back from the alignment shop and cruse some more. IDK what this number should be at.

A/F shouldn't read in percentage. There is something odd with that code...

Stoichiometric A/F ratio for a gas motor is 14.7:1. It should be very close to that number anytime you are not accelerating hard, coasting or when the engine is cold.

You can also do the math to show Lambda, which is defined at 1.00 for a stoichiometric A/F ratio. For that version, it should be very near 1 except for the situations above...

I used this code...

I've made some progress on this... I need some more time and studying of the Xgauge coding math, etc. and I'll have some answers here.

We shall see if we can get A/F ratio on '99 CA trucks...

-Charlie

Only a month later! Actually took down the notes as to what worked on my truck:

TXD: 686AF10114
RXF: 044145140000
RXD: 2808
MTH: 05B900800000
Name: AFR

From the numbers I am seeing, the AF sensor is pretty limited in accuracy. It either shows around 14.7 (almost all situations), 20-22 (coasting at higher RPM) or ~9 (full throttle).

On most wide-band AFR sensors, 9-10 is 'full rich' - where the sensor can't read any richer. I can almost guarantee the truck isn't running that rich. Similarly, on most AFR sensors, 20-22 is shown for full lean (coasting, fueling off). That one makes sense.

I would expect some limitations (it isn't a true wide-band), so maybe that's what we get. I'll be going back to showing my trip MPG in that slot on my scangauge now... (I have Intake temp, water temp, trans temp and trip MPG on there normally)

-Charlie

I freaking love you!!! thank you!

I was close, got the TXD and RXD the same, the RXF was off 1 number... and well the MTH was off...

plugged it in after my drive to work, just sitting in the parking lot, it was up-dating very quick... I was reading 14.5-15.3 at idle... can't wait to see it going home...

now it is kinda odd... I haven't driven with it yet, but the numbers didn't seem so stiff as you're describing...
