What kind of transmission fluid for 2003?

My 2003 4Runner (V8 SR5 with dipstick trans) is due for transmission fluid change. Any trans fluid from autopart store that meet the requirement of "ATF type IV" or should I still need to get them from Toyota dealer (or a recommendation to order from the web)?

Saw Genuine Toyota ATF Type IV on Amazon for $7.84/quart and free shipping.

you can either go with Toyota ATF or Valvoline maxlife. I use Valvoline maxlife in both of my 4runner and no issue. I think it's around $25-27 bucks a gallon (5quarts) at walmart.

Amazon is where I get mine. Every oil change I swap in some fresh Type-IV. At each oil change I drain as much as I can from the tranny using a milk jug with quart marks on it. Then add the same amount of fresh fluid.

Has anyone heard of any problems later down the road from using the Valvoline Maxlife in place of Type IV on the dipstick trans? Assuming a full drain through the cooler lines so as not to mix the two

On their website Valvoline Maxlife they state that it's suitable for...."...Toyota/Lexus Type T, T-II, T-IV, WS, CVTF FE, and CVTF TC...", so you should be good to go.

Draining the fluid via the cooler lines WILL mix the 2 fluids because you have to add new fluid as you drain fluid so the actual level doesn't get too low or you risk damage to the transmission, but shouldn't be a issue especially if you keep going until all new fluid is coming out of the line.
