Had owned a number of Cherokees over the years, one of which was my "baby" (lifted and littered with my blood and sweat, etc). But then I had two kids. Having the driver's seat all the way back left no leg room for my daughter in her booster seat, so I needed to find a new vehicle. I didn't want to give up being able to explore Colorado's 4x4 trails, nor did I want to give up the reliability of the Cherokees.
The 4Runner fit the bill - my kids have room, the drivetrain has a proven track record, and an available factory locker and ability to fit decent size tires with no lift (have 265/75 Duratracs currently) meant I could do pretty much any of the trails I'm interested in.
Now I just need to duplicate the V8 swap documented here, and I'll be set for a few more years.
