My stock 01 sr5 4x4 is too low. The 15" wheels and running boards make it lower (and look lower) than the Limiteds and earlier 3rd gens.

So I'm saving for the ultimate toytec lift.

Well in that case, turbo diesel swap should be your 1st mod, it's the #1 thing I love about my truck.

For me: removing the running boards, Tacoma whip, remove airbox elbow, dry element air filter, Tundra brakes, Synthetic fluids everywhere, All-Terrain Tires...

For better general offroad performance I would say the most important are:
- up to date maintenance (you aren't going anywhere offroad if your rig breaks down)
- extended diff. breathers
- good tires
- sliders

Followed by:
- suspension

All I've done in 12 years is add lighting, a REAL horn, good sounds, and pull the running boards. A tall '99 5-speed has been plenty capable off-road for what I do.

First thing I do to any car I own... brake upgrade. I did the tundra brake upgrade last weekend on my 98. Well worth it, those stock rotors warp like crazy when heated up. My friends 99 needs it done also.

It was ten years ago, from some auto parts place that is now a women's gym. I have no idea what FIAMM. They are loud, though.

Really to make the 4runner better off road, then tires. They will do wonders. Also a locker is important as a bunch of us learned today. It just depends on what you will do with it. Otherwise a stereo makes it more enjoyable.
