Windows down, no music, just the motor and the wind.
ETA: Well, that's my preferred when wheeling alone. If in a group and I'm not the lead dog then it's windows up to keep the dust out. In that case it's whatever station I land on, preferably something relaxing. I prefer to just take it easy when off road instead of ripping around.

I don't do the off-road thing, but anytime the wife and I are on a road trip.

This is tricky but here are the possible scenarios:
1.) Wheeling alone on rougher than expected trails: I listen to the sweet sweet music of my knuckles cracking as they turn white on the wheel and I am praying to a god I don't believe in to not let any part of my truck break and strand me.
2.) Wheeling alone on less rough roads: sometimes Dad Rock (read: Classic Rock that reminds me of my Dad who used to take me off-roading in his '94 4Runner back when it was new), sometimes alt-country stuff (Moondoggies, Maldives, etc.), sometimes black metal, sometimes thrash metal, sometimes doom gaze.
3.) Wheeling with anyone else: whatever the **** I want to listen to because they can get out and walk up the damn mountain if they don't like it. Just kidding, luckily most of my friends and my significant other have similar tastes in music.
As for windows down, so much dust! I tend to sunroof it (unless brushing under tree branches because I don't want bees/arachnids to fall on to my head...ask me how I know) and leave the rest of the windows cracked or up.

Yeah, that was a joke. That music gives me an almost instant headache, but the fact that there is a grindcore(?) metal band fronted by 2 pitbulls makes me laugh. There is also Hatebeak another thrash/metal band with an African grey parrot for a lead singer...lol:guitar3:

Hahah it's funny. And that's just crap music too. I hate when people just do open notes and fast drums. No. Make some music! Dropping down to drop A and doing A power chords isn't gonna work!

I've gotten into serious, life threatening trouble off-road twice in my life (went through the ice in my former '96 Cherokee sport at night; rolled off of a trail and ended up upside down in a stream in an '01 Hilux in Afghanistan). Both times I was listening to Flirting with Disaster by Molly Hatchet.
Even when I'm not wheeling and that song comes on, if I'm in a moving motor vehicle, I change the station.
I usually listen to the fan, and what little of my engine I can hear over it when I'm wheeling these days.

When I'm off-road, 99.5% of the time I prefer to keep the stereo silent and just enjoy the ride and the scenery.
When I'm on the road, I usually put on some good tunes and sing along, or even just sing a cappella. My taste in music is not exactly "mainstream", though. I like gospel music -- mostly southern gospel quartets and country gospel.

I really like to listen to punk or classic rock half the time I'm on the road or on an easier trail, Any of my favorite metal bands when I'm on the harder stuff, or the other half of the time I'm on the street

I guess some of you aren't in very dusty areas. If you get a 10th of an inch of dirt throughout the entire interior in a wheeling trip you'd roll your windows up through almost all of it ha. I only roll them down when it's somewhat tricky or it's a water trail. Plus when it's 105 I like my AC.

Have't gone off road yet, so can't say what I'd listen to then, probably keep it off to concentrate on the environment conditions and etc. but for on road I put the windows down and music up and put metal on, currently its Architects (from the UK), but can never go wrong with Bleeding Through (from the US) and a bit of Parkway Drive from here in Australia.
