I use Google Maps and Waze.

Paper maps. Us Forest service maps, etc. Phones can't do anything when you have no service

You download the maps to your phone before you go out. The GPS works without cell phone service. Paper maps are a great backup but pale in comparison gps and all the other features.

Waze is great for crowd sourcing info like where the cops are but not so much for offline/off road uses.
