The bigger question is...how often are you changing your oil? If you change it every 5-7.5k miles, then it really does not matter what oil brand that you use as long it is one of the big brand names. Think about it...oil nowadays is high quality from the big brand names (Castrol, Mobil, Penzoil, etc.). And if you're changing it every 5k miles, none of the oil will go bad on you, whether it be synthetic or regular. The main thing is to change your oil FILTER often...this has more effect on your engine performance than changing the actual oil IMHO. If i was not so lazy, then i would change the oil filter every 5k miles and the oil every 10k miles. As it stands now, for my Mercedes (synthetic from factory), i change my oil and filter every 10k miles. For my other cars, it is every 5k miles for both.

I thought 10W30 went the way of the dodo? 90% of the cars are 5W30 and the rest are 5W20.JPL said:

Some people are loyal to specific brands of oil, but as long as you buy oil with the SAE symbol on the container, you can be sure that it meets or exceeds the same standards as any other oil.
Believe it ot not, the forumulation of motor oil changes over time and there's a designation for each change. I believe they are currently at the "SM" designation which happened to be a pretty big change. Do a web search if you want to learn more information about the current changes.

Take a small spoon and fill it with plain oil of your choice any weight, hold it over a heat source till it burns.
Repeat this process with Mobil 1 any weight.
Then you decide what you want in your engine if your 4Runner some how has a big cooling leak at highway speed, and it takes you some time to get safely stopped?

Any major brand will do. And +1 on the frequency of the oil and filter changes being a bigger factor than what brand oil.
Typically, here's my rule-of-thumb which has worked well for me on over 13 vehicles:
Dino: 3,000 mile changes
Synthetic Blend: 5,000-7,500 mile changes ("abuse" adjusted)
Full synthetic: 8,000-10,000 miles ("abuse" adjusted)
Extend those if you're doing oil analysis and obtaining good results.
I use M1 and an M1 filter in the 4Runner. I tow and change the oil and filter every 8,000 miles. My 3rd gen was the same except I changed that at 10,000 miles and sold it with 153,000 miles and still ran like a top with no issues. My 2nd gen used dino oil and Fram filters at 3,000 mile changes. I sold her at 205,000 miles to a friend. Last I heard he had over 300,000 miles on her.
I use Amsoil oil and filters in my Mustang (8,000 - 10,000 mile oil/filter changes)... because I CAN!
