What oil brand

I was the first to reply giving my choice to the question, and it was Mobil 1.:awais:

Mobil is a brand. Mobil 1 is a type of oil (synthetic), not a brand. If you said that you used Mobil oil and left it at that, then you would have been sufficiently answering the OP's question.

But since you said Mobil 1 and then went on to talk about burning oil on a spoon, it's completely clear that you're turning this thread into a synthetic vs. conventional oil debate, which is not what the topic was about in the first place.

Extreme cold, yeah, but mostly better protected against anxiety or the loss of warm fuzzies about a brand. Not much more than that.

I agree. In my mind, there's nothing wrong with guys who like to use synthetic (any brand) in their engines, but since this became the topic once again on an oil thread, I'll say that there's no evidence at all that an engine run on conventional oil can't last just as long or longer than an engine run on synthetic oil. I've seen older Toyotas with 350,000+ miles on them that used nothing bug regular old dino oil.

And that's why I stick with regular oil changed at 4,000 mile intervals. But hey, that's just me.

I run Mobil oil in my street cars and my race cars - specifically Mobil 1 synthetic.

Haven't yanked any of my street cars apart to check on their progess, but I have a 10 year old V8 Tundra that started getting Mobil 1 at 1500 miles and still runs like a top (145k miles, no smoke, easy starts, no valve chatter).

As for my race cars, I tear those engines down routinely, and can say that synthetic is much easier on the parts. I used to run Texaco Havoline dino oil (my old sponsor sold their products) and had several oil related breakdowns in one season. Since switching my late model (358 cid, 2 bbl carb) to Mobil 1 about 8 years ago, no breakdowns or any oil related problems at all. Can run 5-6 races (250-350 VERY HARD miles) on the same oil and it comes out nearly as clean as it goes in. My new sponsor (for the past 4 years) is a local tire company that sells Mobil 1, so I don't have to put Mobil 1 into empty Havoline bottles anymore...lol (Havoline use to burn out a lot (usually took a quart between heats), so I took some to the track with me a lot...before I changed sponsors, I changed oil brands, and was putting Mobil 1 into Havoline bottles to hide the fact from my sponsor - not that Mobil 1 burns out like dino oil did...sort of like Hendrick Motorsports puts Mobil 1 into their Quaker State bottles today since they too run Mobil 1 but can't admit to it.)

I tend to change my street car oil at 6k miles (regardless of whether their "computers" tell me to or not) since that is about the right time to rotate the tires. I simply do both at the same time. My GMs all want me to go to 15k miles between changes...according to their oil life monitoring systems...but I never have. Yes, I started my '08 Runner on Mobil 1 when I thought she was ready for it (about 3500 miles - to seat the rings properly and whatnot).

Pennzoil

I just recently switched to Pennzoil Platinum @ 30K miles because its only $20 at Wally World. My Maxima uses 4.5Q so 2 jugs of 5w30 does both for $40 - and of course there is the synthetic bonus. I noticed the engine clicking (lifter noise?) almost completely disappeared after the switch - noticeably smoother now...

Can I switch to synthetic after 41k of regular oil?
I have no history of oil changes for this truck so I have to assume that he/she used regular oil.

I pretty much had the same situation. I bought my 2004 4Runner last Nov. and it had 40,000 miles on it. I changed over to Mobil 1 the next day. I did notice that the oil seem to get darker quicker than usual. I decided to do the next change quicker than usual. I did it around 4,000 miles instead of my usual 5,000 miles. The oil now seems to be doing much better.

As far as not changing over to synthetic, I would say, cars with over 100,000 miles, I would think twice about before changing. I have a 1992 Previa with 155,000 miles and I am leaving that with regular oil. So, I would say go ahead and change over. I checked it a few times after I changed, just to see if I saw any problem.

I was using mobil 1 but just recently I couldn't find it anywhere so I switched to Penzoil Platinum for one oil change.....but I'll be going back to my Mobil 1 Truck & Suv (which was really hard to find) since i tow.....

Sorry it took me so long to respond. I guess I must have a life (I only post once or twice a week on average) unlike yourself. How's that for the pot calling the kettle black? LOL.

Don't let the small things in life bother you!
