What other vehicles have as good of a 4WD system as the 4th Gen T4R?

So I recently read about how the 5th Gens (except the Limited) don't have 4H (unlocked diff) capability like the 4th Gens since the diff is always locked in 4H or 4L. Being from MN the ability to run 4H unlocked is important to me since roads can change from snow packed, to dry, to icy to dry over a dozen times on my way to work and I use 4H now a large amount of time in the winter.

So my question is, what other vehicles have as good of a 4WD system, with the 5 drivetrain options that the 4th gen T4R has? Other manufacturers included.

Small correction: 4WD, not AWD. AWD is automatic diff power. Full time 4WD isn't really that... great, I guess. Why do you need full-time? Just run a part time in 4HI, and isn't it the same as 4HI in a fulltime?

Pretty sure every generation Jeep Grand Cherokee V8 has it. I thought certain 5th gens have a full time mode. Without research, plenty of other SUVs such as the ford explorer are likely to offer fulltime. Its more popular than manually selectable part time cases at this point.

The Sequoia has the exact same 4wd system as the V6 4runner. You can run it in 2wd, 4wd unlocked on the highway, or 4wd locked off-road.

In fact, the Sequoia is the only way you can get a Toyota with multi-mode 4wd AND a V8. All the other V8's either have full time 4wd (4runner, Lexus) or part-time 4wd with no center diff (Tundra.)

I honestly feel that Jeep's Quadra-Drive and Quadra-Drive II were each amazing 4wd systems. QDI had LSDs front and rear, and QDII made it front and rear electronic LSDs. QDII could put 100% of the power to one corner of the drivetrain if needed.

I believe the front ELSD was discontinued around 2010?

I drove my 2001 Jeep through some serious sh*t. Had some Nokian Vatiiva A/T tires on it, and I swear it was unstoppable.


Haven't had a chance to drive the 4Runner through anything remotely close to what I drove my Jeep through, but hopefully it's up to the challenge. :eyebrows:

T1 and T2 VW Touareg. V6, V8, and V10 TDI. I don't know about the new 3rd gens, they have a V6 TDI now and gasser V6. Not sure if you can still get a V8.

We own an '08 V6. Beautiful machines, but plan on expensive maintenance!!

Anything is better than the 4th gen's system in my opinion. absolutely horrible. Audi's quattro is very impressive. My second gen is amazing... we'll see how my grand Cherokee does. it has full time 4wd which I hate. At least it's only a transfer case swap away.

Subaru's are just about unstoppable in snow. If it weren't for the lack of ground clearance they could go anywhere.

Lol sorry Zak.. it's only my personal experience. the overactive VSC and track system kills it. the fact that you have to lock the diff just to disable it sucks. ABS is overreactive as well. in slushy snow, that just sucks.

Fair, VSC is a pain. I still need to do the VSC off mod, been way too lazy with all the snow we've had here. I'm trying to get my dad' VSC off switch from his 08 first since he doesn't use it :heh:

Also, wish mine had 2wd, but the 1200 inch worm t case and associated parts costs (don't tell my wallet about the impending 1300 charge for the steel bumper) are way too much for me and I don't have the time change it. gotta do my t belt too. list never ends.

Anyway I find the 4th gens very capable in the snow especially with a good tire

I'm glad that I don't have all time 4wd, I like being in rear wheel and able to control when I engage the 4 wheel low or high. With that said, I have never owned a vehicle that was as unstoppable in the elements, I'm on my second one for that reason :bounce:

No a 4th Gen 4Hi = AWD and 4th Gen 4Hi center locked = 4x4
