What portable air compressor do you use?

I know a lot of guys on here use on board air compressors but what portable compressors do you guys use? I carry a Schumacher jump box in my rig to help others out and in the off chance I need a boost. I would like to have a compressor handy if needed. What would you recommend?

I have a little Viair 90p. After four years of abuse and ignoring cycle times I think it's starting to get a little tuckered. I'll be switching up to a dual compressor onboard system with kicker tanks and retiring the 90p to emergency duty in the wife's truck.

I have a Viair 450P that I've been using for a couple years. It works well. I now have an ARB CKMA12 to be hardmounted in the truck somewhere to run my locker.

I scored a 20# CO2 tank for 40 bucks this weekend.


From everything I've read, the PowerTank is the way to go.

I read a guy's review, saying he filled all four of his 35s from 10 to 35 psi 40 times. That's 160 tire inflations. And in about a minute.

The fact that they can power most air tools is pretty tempting as well.

Filling the tanks only costs about 20 bucks.

Of course, you run the risk of running out of CO2, but I'll still have the ARB Compressor is that happens. Or I'll just get another 20# tank.

me too, off craigslist. bought simplest valve from wheeler's for $55. HyperFlo 150psi Non-Adjustable CO2 Regulator. already have hose and chuck. all in @ $100.
no need for valve with gauge bc CO2 stays at same pressure until empty. Keep track of fill level via weight.
quick. convenient. simple.
i swapped my 20# for a 10# at a local home brew supply store. Half the weight. smaller tank. easier to pack, hoist, etc.
I have 275/16 tires i run at 35 lbs on road and only air down to ish20 lbs off road. I don't wheel every weekend so the 10lb is plenty for me.

carry this as backup. 5 year warranty.

I have a Viair 300P that I bought back in August and I love it. I've used a lot of cheap portable compressors in the past and couldn't believe how much better a quality one performs in terms of inflation times and noise level.

Are you pretty happy with the 90P? I've been debating on buying the 85P or 90P for my lawn truck; we have a cheap Bell compressor now and I'd like to get something a little closer, in terms of performance, to my 300P without spending so much.

I've liked it. It's not as fast as a bigger pump, but it's fast enough for my skinny 33s. The 88p has come out since I've owned the 90, it's a better pump for less money.

The 88p does look a little better but I'd like to avoid another screw on connector. Guess I'll have to give it some more thought. Thanks for the info.

I've been using a Harbor Freight compressor for a few years, the switch finally crapped out on me this summer so I need to put a new switch on it. It has served me well for ~$50 w/ a coupon.

When I blew up the hose on my 90p, I discovered that the fitting on the manifold is NPT. I bet the 88p is too, you could unthread the stock hose and put anything you wanted in its place?

Didn't think about that, read that a lot of these have non-standard threads

I'm using a little Viair 70p. It's obviously not recommended for 265 sized tires, but it works just fine. Since the stock tires are P rated metrics, I rarely drop the pressure below 24 psi. So getting them from 24 to 34 isn't a big deal. Takes less than 2 minutes for each tire... Now, once I get LT rated tires and start dropping the pressure to 15-18 psi and pumping it back up to 37-40 psi, that'll be a different story.

Mv50 here as well. Was going to hard mount it but it's easier to keep it in the carry case for other tasks.
