What Quality Hi-Output Alternator Options Are There?

As the title states, I am gathering research on working out a custom charging/battery set-up in the near future. Deciding on using a dual battery set-up with isolated batteries to power the main vehicle and auxiliary components such as the winch, lights, ect.

Not sure what companies out there are actually good quality who make hi-output bolt-in applications. From the hour or two I spent looking around the web I found a rough estimate of $425~$550 for 250-330amp Alternators for my 4.7L V8 (2UZ-FE, pre-VVTI)

Any of you guys had any luck with specific companies? Or any input on how you set-up your electrical system if you did go with a more powerful alternator?

And Overkill is okay in my book! :gun6:

Discussing air compressor needs/wants and thinking about the high amperage draw from the onboard air system I had in mind I went window shopping for some HO alternators and remembered this thread.

Mechman doesn't make any 4.7L 4Runner HO Alternators...

But I did oddly find two practically identical units that fit my possible needs;

Thing is they're so identical I don't quite understand who's copying who... still pricey for about $900 a pop...

Yeah, this was what I noticed as well... I wonder what the price difference is, I'll shoot them a quote tomorrow.

The bearing failed just outside of warranty, and the shop repaired it for the cost of shipping and parts. The fellow I spoke to thought it was due to bad belt tension, and I'm not sure he's right, but either way I can't fault the customer service.

I believe its about 130-ish amps? With 70~80 amps at idle.

Interesting, they have a 320 amp alternator for a little over half the price of the DC/SBC one... I wonder what the idle amps are and their construction? Not doubting their quality, just curious as to their construction.

I am sure my guy can make a Ho unit in the 200amp area for around $300

I remember being taught how to canabalize GM alternators to boost them up, but as I've learned more and gained experience in various fields of technology I wonder how reliable a unit I was building.

Not saying you're friend is making crap, but there are a few things to consider.

~Is it 200amps at idle or at "normal" speed which are two different things.
~What about heat dissipation? More current=more heat
~Bearings, casing, diodes, ect ect.

Again I am not doubting that someone could build one that pumps 200amps out, I am just curious how much the stock casing/internals are going to support when you start pushing the juice up.

I'll have to email Mechman when I get the chance.

There was a thread on expo about this. But I recall the consensus being that a big alternator was not as big if a deal as many if us thought. I will see if I can find it.

I plan on a lot of electrical draws on my system and I want to run a dual battery system. One of the air compressors I am looking at has a healthy 80amp draw at times.

So here's an email I recieved from SBC in regards to a price inquiry, which gave me a mild cardiac tachycardia;

Thank you for your interest in our high output alternators.

You are correct, DC Power and Smart Battery Charger are basically the same company. DC Power generally sells in the USA while we sell internationally.

SBC alternators are slightly different than DC Powers as they are designed for extreme climate and work conditions. The output is generally a little higher due to the higher temperature regulator.

Our alternators are built from the ground up so we do not use any cores, sorry.

im running a mechman 240 in my 4.0. its been very good to me and my stereo.

I have a mechman 320 amp alternator I'm waiting to install. I'm also running a dual battery set up for my car audio. The batteries are dry cell batteries made by X/S Power. I have my batteries wired parallel instead of isolated so they work together as one big charging system. You will also need some heavy duty wire. I purchased a 50 foot spool of zero gauge wire from Sky High Car Audio. The wire is pure oxygen free copper (ofc). Always get ofc wire, it costs more but carries more current.. I recommend all of the brands I mentioned. I also recommend you do the big 3 wire upgrade. I can also recommend wire terminals and battery terminals if you decide to get X/S Power batteries...
