What Scan Tool??

Hey folks!

I'm just wondering what Scan Tool we use to connect to the Diagnostic port in the engine bay?? My rig's been giving me a Check Engine light for about a week now....I've tried tightening the gas cap, filling up the oil, checking the coolant, and after doing all of these, disconnecting the Negative Cable on my battery to reset the computer. Unfortunately, the light comes back on after about 30 or so miles of driving! The truck runs fine, at least is seems that way.

Basically, I'm looking to use the scan tool to see what code the light is giving.

The OBDII port that you will want to use is under the dashboard (right above your right leg when on the gas pedal, next to the center console.

I just bought a ScanGaugeII. Its very nice and gives you lots of digital "gauges" so you know what your engine is doing.

Autozone will also scan for free.
 
Thanks man! I actually found out from my buddy with the Taco, just minutes before checking this thread! That being said, we don't have an Autozone around here, (I don't think we have those in Canada). We do have a "Parts Source" and I think they also do scans for free.....I'm currently waiting to hear from a guy I know here locally, who may have the scanner.....if not...I'll check with Part Source!

BTW, not sure if my 98 is different from your 2000....but I found a port in my engine bay for the OBD2 scanner??? Do the trucks have 2 ports????
 
My 2000 does have a secong diag port in the engine bay but i dont believe its the same as the obd port inside. X2 on the scangauge, its a little spendy up front but i did a perm install and use it for various monitoring every time i drive, i love it.
 
Depends on what you want to do. If you just want to read and clear P-codes almost anything on Amazon or E-Bay will do. If you want to analyze your engine, a laptop and an interface that handles live data is the way to go. This lets you graph front and rear sensor voltages in real time, for example. I have a BR-3 OBDII interface that has served me well, but if I bought one today I would get a ELM327 Bluetooth scanner off e-bay and a program such as ProScan. All for less than a unit such as Scanguage or Ultraguage which are meant for full-time use in the car.

The front plug is not OBDII--it's proprietary Toyota. The OBDII is under the driver dash.

I am rather pleased with the Ultra Gauge I have had for about 4 days so far.

Ordered it when they were out of stock back on July 5th and they gave an extra $5 off so it was $63.95.
You get $9 rebate after filling out some totally draconian rebate form that was borderline ridiculous but still you get $9 back. So was only $55 plus the shipping which was $8.26 so total cost was $63.26 after rebate.

I have not had any "codes" yet so I assume it will work just fine for that.
But it is very helpful to check your gas mileage, engine temp and many other things plus codes the second they happen.
Fits nicely and very easily in the left hand corner of windshield with its supplied bracket, took about 2-3 minutes to install, totally out of the way and easy to read while driving.
Hard to beat it for under $65

I moved here from Canada in 1994 and I still can't figure out why Americans don't use the metric system yet! Damn stubborn Americans!! (I have dual citizenship, so I tend to go with the argument which benefits me at that time. Maybe next week I will make fun of the Looney)

You need the DLC/OBDII under the dash, the port under the hood is for ABS
